My New Favorite Watch

JORD When I was first contacted by JORD to try out and share my experience with one of their wood watches, I was a bit skeptical. I'm not super into wearing things on my wrists. Plus, during the summer we spend most of our days near water. Why would I want a wood watch? Or so I thought.

Then I looked at their website and I started to get really excited. I changed my mind about which watch I wanted to try about eleven times. I even told a friend I picked a watch completely different from the one I actually picked. Ultimately, I chose the Zebrawood and Maple watch from the Fieldcrest Series.

Then my watch came in the mail. It was a bit snug at first so I wasn't wearing it much. And then I unpacked the gorgeous box to take pictures and found extra links in the bottom.  I have no clue why I didn't look right away, but I was thrilled that they were included and also impressed by this sign of quality.

Once the extra link was in place, my watch took up residence on my wrist. I love it so much and simply take it on and off throughout the day if we end up near water. The colors are neutral but striking and the wood makes it very lightweight. Its actually perfect for summer, completely contrary to my initial thoughts. But you better believe I will be wearing it year round. The watch gets easily noticed without me noticing any added bulk to my wrists. Even when I am working at my computer, this watch rarely comes off.
JORD

JORD

Basically, I've been proven wrong and absolutely love wearing the right accessory on my wrist

I love the details. I keep switching up what I wear with the watch on my wrist and even which wrist. I've traditionally be a left wrist watch wearer, but now I think my new watch is going to live on my right wrist. Look at me, I am a changed woman. (Yes, a tad dramatic, but I just have that many great things to say about this watch). These watches would make a great gift - anniversary, Christmas, graduation. Add them to your list. Your people will thank you.

JORD provided me with this watch in exchange for this review, but the thoughts here are entirely my own. And I definitely started as a skeptic. My super fashionable sister also loved my watch so much when she saw it in person, she ordered her own! If you get one, I'd love to know which you pick and what you think.

Toys That Entertain the Busy Toddler

We have all had a sweet taste of Spring these past few days. But if unpredictable weather forecasts have any chance in being right, there are still a few weeks left of winter. As we are itching to get our of our shoebox apartment, I have been reminded of the toys that work best at keeping us all entertained.

Symphony in B Orchestra - This toy was given to Behr as a "happy big brother" gift. It has become a favorite to all. Given its shape, it sits on a shelf out of reach with the instruments stowed away, but when we bring it down, Behr and Hudson sometimes will make music for nearly an hour. And it is significantly more soothing than the cymbals they like to play with. Plus, we have had conversations about a wide range of instruments from a clarinet to an accordion to a sitar.

Picasso Tiles - These are the perfect combinations of magnets + building blocks. Hudson can make shapes with them, Behr can build masterpieces. We visited friends who have a larger collection and 4 kids under 4 were entertained for almost the entire afternoon -- playing together! -- with these picasso tiles. Of the three different types of building block magnets we have received as gifts, these are definitely my favorite.

AquaDoodle - This is another one of those toys that stays put away, but when it comes out, everyone cheers. Recently, I have let Behr access it and fill up the water on his own. This makes no mess and we have fun watching the drawings and "secret messages" fade away as the water evaporates.

Dot Markers - These might be my own childhood favorite, but dot markers are often our rainy day cure. Plus there are tons of free print-ables on pinterest and homeschool blogs.

Automoblox - these block-based cars come completely apart and have interchangeable pieces, perfect for the budding engineer. Behr loves to switch them around. I like to take them all completely apart and watch him put them back together. Also, they don't make noise...just incase your ears are still ringing from the idea of the orchestra toy I listed first.

Check out my last Gift Guide for toys for this 3-5 age range.
What are your favorite gifts to give the younger people in your life?

Also, Behr and I have been discussing, if Hudson is almost a Toddler, than what will Behr be?
What comes after toddler?

2013 Gift Guide for Boys

As a mom of two young boys and a girl that would have rather been playing with matchbox cars than barbie dolls, I feel like I have a knack for boys gifts. This list includes some of our perennial favorites and a few on Behr's wish list this Christmas!

SmartMax // Behr received his first set when Hudson was born and they now go everywhere with us. Magnetic, the pieces click into one another to make different shaped cars and structures. A larger set is on our Christmas list. Behr actually carries around the promotional insert that came in the box and tells me daily that he wants the stunt kit.

Baseball Tee // Living in the city, I crossed most sports equipment off our toy list until I noticed people carrying these to the park occasionally. The good old baseball tee is portable and much better than trying to hold the ball for your kid to swing at, trust me! Plus, this is portable and takes up minimal space.

Bowling Set // I love this so much, I also recommended this last year (and a few items from that gift guide are now on our wish list this year). We gave this to Behr for his 2nd birthday and it still gets played with weekly. Worth every penny!

Trampoline // I wish we had room for this. Doesn't every kid need a good trampoline? Perhaps Behr would nap if I gave him a few hours ours to jump out his energy? This is an item we would definitely be asking grandparents for if we had more space. {Grandparents, if you are reading this, don't get this for us! Remember, we don't have a yard!}

Silver Speedster // Behr's first birthday present, which he still rides all the time. Again, worth the sticker price! If you are wondering how we fit this behemoth in our apartment after the last description, we don't! It sits in the hallway outside our apartment.

Slot Car Race Track // Don't you remember growing up with these? Behr and Hudson (mostly Behr) broke out Uncle Ben's set from the 90s and played with it over Thanksgiving. I am nostalgic for the classic toys, and this one is high on the list.

Pallina Game // This is a great game to teach colors, patience, and even being gentle (or careful). We have had a lot of fun as a family playing this game and adapting to Behr's various versions of the rules. Originally his goal was to make all the balls drop as fast as possible!

Rain Boots // We have tried them all. Western Chief are our favorites. Both the price point and the quality are top notch. Get them for all of the kids you love.

What are your favorite gifts for kids?
Most of these gifts are really for the whole family!

2013 Gift Ideas: Blurb Books (again)

I had not been planning on posting gift guides this year, but as I think about shopping for my own family, they have organically begun to percolate. So for the next few days I will be sharing some of my all time favorite things to buy people (and the things I wish I could buy my own family!)

I have been perusing Blub for the better part of today and realized that there are some great books being created by that community! People love getting really creative, one-of-a-kind books for Christmas. Books that elicit a “where did you find this?” response. As the leading indie- and self-publishing platform, Blurb has an entire online bookstore full of unique books by an incredible array of undiscovered, self-published authors, artists, and photographers. And while these books probably aren’t in your recipient’s bookshelf, many of them should be. So, if you’re thinking of giving unique gifts this year, consider these titles. Each costs around $40 USD or less:

Cookie Cravings by Maria Lichty and Heidi LarsenWe all have cookie cravings. Popular food blogger Maria Lichter decided to put them into something deliciously original: A baking book featuring 30 recipes you won’t find anywhere else.

Dog by My Side by Adam SchnitzerThis charming collection of original, vintage photos shows us that as long as there have been cameras, we’ve wanted to photograph our canine best friends. As a special bonus, there’s a glossary of the early photographic methods used in the original images.

Around the World with a Toy Camera by Giorgio GiussaniPerfect for the photography or graffiti-art fan on your list. This book is an explosion of gritty color that explores the wonders of street art and analog photography.

Food Stories by Elena ScottA short, wonderfully illustrated collection of recipes (and food stories) that will inspire you to pick up the knife and spatula—or just pen and paper.

Things I Love by Carol Nehls and Jessica RoseIllustrated and written many years apart by a mother and daughter, this sweet rhyming story told by a fox is pure joy for all ages.

Patent Pending by Jordan NatyshenChicken goggles, air-conditioned rocking chairs, monkey jockeys for greyhounds… humankind has invented and sought to patent some amazing and crazy things. Illustrator Jordan Natyshen illustrates some of the strangest in this history of odd inventions.

Tiny Horses are Everywhere by Thea LuxThe perfect stocking-stuffer for fans of off-beat humor, this undeniably nutty book is based on a Tumblr blog and combines simple photo collages of small horses in human environments with incredibly funny captions.

Rouleaux by Anastassia EliasWhat can you do with an empty roll of toilet paper? If you’re French artist Anastassia Elias, you create tiny dioramas inside of the discarded tubes. Inspired by art and movies, these pieces are beautifully crafted, fun, and unbelievably detailed.

Low Fidelity by Bobby GrossmanIf you, or someone you love, listened to New York punk and new wave in the 70s, chances are your favorite artist can be found in this book. Bobby Grossman photographed Iggy Pop, David Byrne, The Ramones, Debbie Harry, Andy Warhol and many more. This book is a time capsule of—and a love letter to—a legendary time, place, and sound.

Take a second and head over to Blurb to see if yo
u can end your search for that perfect gift this season!

Gift Guide: College Students

With one sister in college, a brother graduating this month, and a sister who graduated last May, I consider myself a college student gift guide expert! Here are some of the items that have been on my radar for my own siblings:

Coloud Headphones - whether they want to drown out their roommate, or just listen to their own music, headphones are a key ingredient for successful communal living. Plus these look pretty rad.

Refresh Recharging Station - equipped to charge multiple devices

Doggie Door Stop - perhaps the only dorm approved pet, this door stop will bring on the social and is pretty cheeky.

Thermos - to keep their coffee piping hot during late night study sessions.

TJs Cookbook - to ensure they don't suffer four years of cafeteria food and frozen pizza. p.s. I might need one of these in my own life!

iHorn - this simple plastic base amplifies their iPhone/iPod and it is so affordable, you can use them as stocking stuffers!

Teal Blue Pottery Earrings - Really, I am just obsessed with these earrings so I need to include them in one of my gift guides. Plus the potter, Natalie is an awesome girl. Check out her etsy shop for more of her fabulous goods.

Stan's Donuts - overnight delivery from this LA Bakery. I know a certain someone who might just need a shipment of these! {side note: My youngest sister plays a D1 sport on full scholarship. She is a rockstar. But this means she rarely gets to come home for visits, and when she does, it is always too short - having options like Stan's to send her good food makes her being so far away, slightly less painful for both of us.}

Swiss Army USB - bringing the ultimate cool to file sharing for those ominous group projects.

Gift Guide: Toddlers

Can you tell there is an (almost) two year old boy running around my house these days? I tried with all my might to pick gifts for girls and boys...but my mind keeps gravitating in one direction. Either way, these gifts are sure to please!

Pima Half Zips - These are my favorite for layering, tossing over a t-shirt when we are running late for church, bumming around on the weekends in. My little guy has a few, and they are our #1 go to clothing item for him.

A Gentle Reminder - Lena of Mattie Mae Designs specializes in hand applique shirts and onesies for kids, but recently she added a few embroidery hoops and hand painted pieces to her shop. I love how this very kid friendly art reinforces the mantra I find myself constantly repeating...Be kind...

Crayon Holder - This wooden truck is an aesthetically pleasing addition to any toddler's work table.

Foxy - Could this stuffed animal get any cuter? I like how the fox almost seems as if he is a toddler himself (rather than a baby fox) and know he would be quite the companion on imaginary journeys in our household.

Bowling Set - Behr is getting one for his birthday and we are so excited! This set is sturdy, and enjoyable for all ages!

Giant Noah's Ark - We love wooden play animals, but our collection is rather small. This Noah's Ark could be use in counting, sorting, patterns, bible story time, accompany the reading of other books, or just simply plain fun. This toy would get serious mileage in any home.

Sea Salt - I found this salt in Napa Valley and have been hooked ever since. Get it. For you and everyone else on your list.

Discount: All One Simple Red Stitch Aprons are now 30% off through 12/13

Downton Abbey Cookbook: Although I have never watched a single episode, I am certain this cook book will be just as authentic and the nationally acclaimed BBC hit series.

Gift Guide: The Men in Your Life

Why are men always the most difficult to shop for? Is it because they don't wear and adore accessories as much as women? Do they need less stuff? Or are they just picky? Whatever the reason for the difficulty with gift giving in your life, this list will meet your needs.

Klein Canvas Bottom Tool Bag - a great carry on, gym bag, or weekender for the guy who travels, enjoys guys weekends, or can press more than you.

London Undercover Umbrella from J.Crew - for the guy who travels between buildings or two and from his car during the day. This umbrella is sturdy and dapper. Plus, you never want to get caught out in the rain. Side Note: Secretly wishing this umbrella was mine! Does anyone want to get it for me?

Klein Tool Pouch - for the handyman or the guy who thinks he is Mr. Fix-it and you don't have the heart to tell him otherwise! This belt attachment may also come in handy when grilling or tailgating if you can think outside the box.

McClure's Pickles - wait, you mean your guy doesn't return from every grocery trip with at least one jar of pickles? They are a hot commodity in my house (and perhaps my husband's favorite part of me being pregnant) Why not kick it up a notch with Brooklyn's best? Psst...they also carry an incredible line of sauces and relishes if pickles aren't your jam.

Jack Spade Dopp Kit - for business trips, weekend getaways, and maybe even to soften the blow that you will be spending Christmas with your family again this year... Start your man's morning off right, and end his evenings with everything in its place. A variety of color options available. Deck the Halls!

We tried a new approach to Christmas decorating this year. We broke out the music and tinsel and bells, before we ate our Thanksgiving turkey. Only to realize there wasn't much to decorate until we purchased our tree and garland. But we had fun rocking the Christmas music all weekend long anyway!

We have amassed a collection of ornaments from years of Christmas together and places we have traveled, but if I was starting fresh, these would be some that I would consider.

Star Tree Topper // Lobster // Sequin Ornaments // Gnome // Trio of Penguins // Glittered Dove // Mercury Glass (six) // Ship // Hedgehog // First Christmas Mouse // Zeolite // Whale // Bird and Feeder // Moose

How did you acquire your collection of ornaments?

Were they handed down to you?

Collected by your parents or given as gifts?

Mementos from your travels?

As a child, my family attended a Christmas party with a parting gift of an ornament for each guest. They were beautifully painted wood nutcrackers, snowmen and sleighs. Each year there was a different assortment to choose from. I remember loving this tradition and hoping someday to do something similar. However I don't throw a huge annual Christmas party, and never appreciated the great cost of this tradition. Instead, perhaps I will give my sons an ornament each year, for their own collection to someday take with them to their own homes. Thankfully I have plenty of time to think about it!

Gift Guide: Giving

In the spirit of thanksgiving, a gift guide to help us see beyond our own traditions and wish lists. Here are a few of the charitable organizations whose missions have stood out to me this year.  Perhaps you can find an organization that would also mean something to a gift recipient on your list this year.

One Sight states that its mission is to restore sight to the 284 million people who suffer from poor vision. You can help today by collecting and donating old glasses.

Based out of Seattle, Washington, 88bikes provides bikes to children in schools and orphanages across the globe.  For $44 you can purchase a bike repair kit and for $88 a bike, but the organization accepts donations of all sizes.  Bonus: 100% of the donated money goes directly to the local economy!

Part of the International Alliance for Youth Sports, the Global Gear Drive is working to enable sports by providing sports equipment to under served areas.  For more information about getting involved, watch this video.

The LCPL Jonathan W. Collins Memorial Fund was founded in honor of the Marine who was killed in action in 2004.  Among the various fund raisers, the memorial fund has partnered with build-a-bear to provide a message to the children of deployed military.  For $25 you can send a child a teddy bear with a voice chip message from their parent overseas.

Helping to fight poverty, Krochet Kids provides jobs for women in Uganda enabeling them to begin providing for their families.  The women crochet clothing, hats, and accessories all available for sale online. Each individual item has the name of the craftswoman and you can look up their individual stories on the website. The organization offers several ways to get involved.

If there is an organization that you love and support that I have no included here {this is by no means a comprehensive list} please provide comment love for the benefit of both our readers and the organizations.  Happy giving!

2011 Gift Guide: Baby Baby

There are so many great gifts for baby. Each year, I could easily create several gear guides for babies.  With a son about to turn one, four cousins under the age of four, and armfuls of other babies in my life between friends and cousins, Christmas shopping for babies has been on my brain.  Here are a few of the items that I keep circling back to:

1. Recycled ECO Fleece Bunting - a mix between Swedish and preppy, certainly cozy.  You can find this set by Polarn O. Pyret for $100. I want to buy it for Behr, even though he already has one.  Maybe they make on in my size?

2. Ukrainescape Red Print by The Littlest Mammoth - this print by Andrea Kalfas brings a worldly sophistication to any little one's space.  I have spent hours designing this gift guide around multiple prints found on The Littlest Mammoth, a perfectly curated collection of international artists. Prints start at just $20.

3. Gnome Bowling Set - I really want to get Behr into bowling.  It seems like the perfect mix of sport and destruction for a little boy who loves to knock things down!  This set by Green Mountain on etsy would be the perfect way to start, especially at $30!

4. Foil Bird Onesie - again, does it come in adult size?  Featured on Nonchalant Mom, this onesie could be yours for $38.  Be sue to check out the blog too!

5. Bunny Milk on the Rocks Onesie - the back of this cracks me up!  What little kid doesn't want to run around with a bunny tail?  Get yours from The Black Wagon for $48

6. Zippity Zany Mittens - Confession, Behr already has these. For only $16 I couldn't resist. As for being included in this guide, the colors were just too perfect to pass up.  I would give these mittens a top notch review.  They are just the right size for itty bitty hands and certainly brighten up our bike rides!

7. Eric Carle Animal Flash Cards - After searching high and low, these flash cards remain on the list of most pleasing to mom and baby.  They make a great gift for all ages and can be found for about $10.

8. Bright Blue Recycle Truck Print - One of my favorite new etsy finds.  Get this print for $16 or buy all four trucks for $34.

9. Wheely Bee by Prince Lionheart - Love this bee!  Can't you just picture the cuteness overload when this toy enters the scene?  Prices range from retailer to retailer, but it appears to be on sale for $50 in the link provided at the time I wrote this post.

2011 Gift Guide: For Mom

This is a gift guide geared to your mom, not the new baby mom's of blog land. How can you honor and cherish the woman who has spent the last 20, 30, 40 + years raising and supporting you?
