Birthday Party Small Style

My son.

You avoid the camera.

You have a knack for sticking out your tongue.

You collect rocks.
In your pockets.
Always.

You are a budding fashionista.

You have new opinions.
Especially about clothes.

You humor me with button downs and bow ties.

You are excited about belly buttons.
And your baby brother.

I cannot wait until we all meet him.
Neither can you.

Clearly we like stripes.

Breakfast Break Dance

A bit unconventional for a Small Style post, but these past few weeks I have taken far more videos than pictures. And this one is too priceless to miss. Pardon the camera shaking from me laughing at how funny my kid can be. Does anyone have any pointers for keeping their iPhone still while laughing hysterically?

Note: Mark and I were sitting on the bedroom floor doing laundry when this scene occurred and Behr clearly had no clue he was being videoed at the start.

Botanical Gardens + Trains

Last weekend we seized the beautiful weather and walked to the US Botanical Gardens to see their train display. I was hoping Behr would be interested. Well, not only was he interested, Behr might have officially fallen in love with trains on Sunday morning! Plus Thomas and Percy made an appearance - note: the fact that I know these things means I have entered a whole new stage in raising a boy! Behr has been carrying around the trains that were in his Easter eggs.

The staff at the Botanical gardens does an incredible job each year creating a whimsical village with multiple train tracks. Their artistry makes the display a treat for the parents too. You might also like to see our last visit when there was an International Orchid display.

Let the Season Begin!

On Sunday morning, we had finally broken free of the fever than plagues us and headed straight to our local hardware store. Seriously guys, this single small business might be the most redeeming quality of trying to run errands in Washington, DC. They always have everything, including the best selection of Christmas trees from another family business in North Carolina.

We snagged a 6 foot tree, two wreaths, 90 feet of garland, three extra sets of lights, bows, hooks and jingle bells. Plus a whole box full of trimmings to make boughs for the doors of the interns on our floor. Our little building is looking mighty festive.

I fell in love with pine cones again.

Mark taught Behr how to pick a good tree.
Do you see those outstretched fingers? Precious.

Behr collected trimmings for the interns.

And then he began telling his baby brother all about our morning, going on in a language only the two of them can understand. Whenever Behr talks to my belly, he catches me by surprise. He gets that his brother is in there. He really gets it. In a way I could never have dreamed.

We may not have settled on the name "brother" yet, but that is all he is called in our home these days. And I'd imagine, whatever we name our second born, Brother is sure to stick.

Autumn Warmth

This past weekend, we were blessed with a beautifully warm Sunday and Monday. My family got outside to soak up some sun before the winter chill settled in for good. We walked around our neighborhood, heading to eastern market for a few errands, and ultimately stopping for a gelato date at pintango (you might have seen our family photo). Fortunately  we brought the camera, and I began snapping away. Everything around us was a brilliant golden orange. Not only did the sun beat down on us, but the colors exuded a warmth of fall that will soon be gone. I lingered, soaking it all in, deeply. Behr had an absolutely blast. We bonded as a family with little on our agenda. It was perfect.

Small Style: Too Cool

Since we were away last weekend without Behr, I had very few photos of him. Here are a few I tried to snap the other morning on my phone before we headed off to daycare. Mr. Cool Guy is apparently becoming a master at not looking at the camera. If only you could have seen his satisfied smile between the photos. He also likes to run to the furthest corner away from our car as soon as we step outside, in a joking protest to his car seat  He never complains once we retrieve him, but this little game has found a permanent place in out morning routine.
