Baby's First Christmas

I love traditions. It has been exciting to introduce traditions to Behr and also for Mark and I to finally begin to set some of our own.  But when it has come to baby's first Christmas, the internet has exploded and I feel overwhelmed. There are a million things to do and places to go, from getting a Christmas tree {we aren't} to visiting Santa {skipping that too} plus all of the regular stuff like baking cookies {not in this house} and decorating {ain't happening this year}. So when I saw a simple craft on pinterest via a sorta fairytale, I thought:

"That's it! That is the tradition I can stick to and commemorate baby's first Christmas!"

I already had everything needed. Plus loads of spare time a few minutes to whip this together. So I set out to make sure this first Christmas wouldn't slip by unrecorded.

Supplies:
a glass ornament ball
clear embossing ink
embossing powder or glitter
a q-tip or two for cleaning up smudges
and heat to seal the handprint, like an embossing tool
a ramekin to set to ornament down to cool. beware, the glass heats up quickly

exhibit a: squirmy baby hands gave me plenty to "touch up"

exhibit b: touched up, pre-heat.  now you can see the hand print more clearly.

exhibit c: I let it sit and cool before adding Behr's name and the year on the back in hopes of repeating this simple craft annually.

And then...

exhibit d: crash.

Moral of the story:

It is so easy, you should make two!

p.s. I did, before breaking this, because I know myself scary well.

I am a complete klutz.
there has to be a better word for this!

remember when I said I needed to invest in band aid?
my sisters thought it was funny.
in fact, now when they refer to this blog as funny, they use that one example.

Fact: I was wearing three band aids prior to breaking this glass ornament.

And to cheer every body up, some of my favorite Christmas tunes:

I am loving...

...the perfect reading chair

Let's be honest. I have got a thing for big bright chairs. I am not sure what I love more about this chair, its bold pattern, or that if feels like a gateway to autumn. It is back to school time, hurricane Irene brought cooler weather to DC, and September is just a day away. This chair is the perfect spot to grab a blanket, curl up and read a book.

Speaking of books, what is on your reading list these days?

Dreaming Big

We are back from vacation, tan and rested.  Photos will be coming soon, I promise.  While I continue to edit those, let me share a little secret I realized on vacation.

I want a big family.

Now, you might question whether this is really a secret.  I have become famous, or infamous for proclaiming that I want 7 children.  But this vacation helped me realize, more than ever that I want a big family.  Mark and I began thinking about what our time at the beach would look like...

...with another baby
...when Behr is a little bit older
...when there are enough of us to build a sandcastle and tear it down simultaneously
...when we can play tag and football on the beach
...when we won't get bored because one kid is asleep, as the others will keep us running

So yes, I am ready for our next baby.  Not at this very moment, no, but excitedly looking towards the future in hope of receiving another incredible blessing in our lives.  Ans all that it entails, including squeezing even more warm blodded bodies into tiny Capitol Hill homes.  So here are a few of my kid's bedroom inspirations.

great for tight spaces, but I am not sure the top of the stairs would work for kids

might be my favorite!

love the originality of the hanging beds, but I am not sure this actually conserves space

might be my favorite!!

vacation home?  yes, please!

build a room over the stairs to make the most of space!
Needing a bunk room is clearly several years off, but it doesn't hurt to start dreaming.

Do you want a big family?  Do you come from a big family?  What is your ideal family size?

Oh Eames, how I love thee...

I have been lusting over the super sleek lines of Eames rocking chairs.  There is no space in our apartment for another chair, but a girl can look right?
retro green

bright blue

or maybe even a pair!

And then my swooning got even worse after seeing how Making it Lovely documented the milestones of her babe in this fabulous piece of art.  Everything gets cuter with a baby right?

Sunny with a side of bright

Are the color palates that draw you in?  Bright and cheery have the ticket for me.  So here are a few spaces I could look at all day {and confession: might repost on during the dreary soggy winter} but now why would I go and talk about a thing like that?  Heres to dreaming of some sunshine all year round!

..........................................

I could totally get ready in front of this dresser...

...after stepping out of that tub...

...before hosting dinner here...

...prepared in this kitchen...

...oh, and the invitations for my guests would have been hand written at this desk...

Yes, please.

Door Decor

Help a sister out!

These are the three door decoration that represent us throughout the year.  It is about this time, after the Fourth of July festivities, that my door feels stale and lonely.  We live in an apartment building at the moment, so live door hangings don't work.  However, I am desperate for something to fill the gaps:

December-the month of Easter
and again from Easter-4th of July/Summer
oh yeah and labor day-Novemebr could use some help too!

We are not huge fans of overly theme-y holiday oriented stuff.  But want classics that welcome us home from the other end of the hall.  Please send me links, suggestions, pictures, even people to follow on pinterest.  I need to find something.  The idea well is running dry.

Loving chevron...

...but I would really rather just call them zig zags.

Here are a few images that I have recently pinned:

This bold zig zag stripe makes me happy, long for hardwood floors to dress, and dream of more kids' rooms to design!

Still not enough chevron?  Check out the chevron love post by simple song.

Spring Rainbows

In case you missed the weather forecast, Spring has been eluding the East Coast.  It is cold, dreary, and damp.  My mood needed a serious boost of joy, and I thought you might too. Bring on the rainbows!

how do you choose which colors to get?  they are all fabulous!

I might be lusting after this rug.

Online Mags

Life is not all about the baby...

...it is just mostly about the baby right now.  He requires a lot of time!

Have you taken the jump into online magazines yet?  I have two loves that I thought I would share with you. &

&

I am in love with both.  Nothing will ever replace Domino.  But these two magazines certainly come close to giving me my decorating/design/shopping/luxury goods fix!  I hope you enjoy them as much as I do.

Two More Nurseries

As I have been continuing to put endless final touches on our nursery, I came across two that also incorporated the blue and orange from the Serena and Lily Ben line.  Will I ever stop looking at nurseries?  Nope, probably not.  They might be my new favorite room to decorate!

This second one is my favorite of all nurseries I have seen.  Once we move into a bigger home (likely never) I might bring this punchy approach to nautical into our son's next room.  I love the vintage looking beach toys hanging on the wall!

Baby Art

During our search for art for the nursery nook, we stumbled upon some beauties.  Here are the top contenders:

love this nursery...looks strangely familiar!

We have decided on the art...purchased and framed it and are ready to hang!  What did we choose?  You will just have to wait and see in the next nursery update!  Which are your faves?

Lamp Hunting = Furniture Buying

Mark and I went hunting for lamps...and we came home with these:

Hunter Trunk = Coffee Table

Terrevida Table = Calligraphy Work Station/Dinning Room Table/Center of Our Living Space

Well, we didn't actually come home with them.  But they are on order and a delivery date will soon be scheduled.  If you have known us for long, you have heard of our 4 year search for a farm looking table and a storage trunk for a coffee table (that was tiny enough to fit in our apartment).  Crate and Barrell came through for us big time this week!

Good thing we had time to wander through their showroom in Annapolis.  Or...the story line could read: "Bad Things Happen When you Have Too Much Time at the Mall."  Either way, we are excited with our finds and look forward to incorporating them into our living room!

Oh yeah...we purchased some lamps as well!

Very productive shopping expedition.

p.s.This may be considered nesting.

Our home is begining to feel more pulled together now that we are slowly replacing the college furniture that has served us for over 10 years!  Time to move on up...

I am loving...

...Green!

The incredibly fresh color, once too closely ties to 60s and 70s mod, has made a revival in a bright cheerful way...and I am loving it!  Here are some of my favorite green inspirations:

It is bright, beautiful, incredibly optimistic, and basically I just have to have it!

Now if only I had room in my apartment for another chair...

New Friday Feature...

...over at Calligraphy by Shannon

My dear friend Lina will be a contributing blogger featuring her savy fiscal skills and love for crafting.  The feature, entitles: "Make It, Fake It, or Buy It" will cover topics ranging from home decorating to weddings and all things inbetween.  Swing on over to see what she has to say about sprucing up for a bit less!

p.s. Check out our cool new button to promote her feature!

I am loving...

...all things Capiz!

It happens to me every year.  In an effort to hang on to every last drop of summer, I crave beach inspired decor.  This year, in my hunt for a baby mobile that didn't have fluffy animals, I turned towards capiz.  In theory in is "all-year" decor, but for me I think it is a last ditch effort to carry the beach into deep Autumn.

Here are a few lookers that have caught my eye recently:

{image}
This number from target is a bit boring...and it breaks the bank at $400+!  Yikes!

{image}

Perhaps a bit too formal for a baby room, but these West Elm lamps might end up in my formal dining room some day...if I ever have a formal dining room...

{image}
Finally, this could work in our Nursery.  And for merely $49 from Urban Outfitters, I like it even more.  Now if only the colors were a bit brighter...
