Best BBQ in DC

Confession: I am about to share the best places for barbecue in Washington DC, but the truth is, I have never been to any of these places! Nope, not a single one. When it comes to a craving for BBQ, I turn to my favorite crock pot menu. But these are the three places that top my must-try list. I would love to hear what you have to say about them all.

Rocklands
2418 Wisconsin Ave. NW, Washington, DC 20007
Known for being a top choice of the White House, Rocklands is also known for its fantastic sides. If you enjoy cornbread, mac and cheese, and greens along with our BBQ, it sounds like Rocklands is the place for you.

Pork Barrel BBQ
2312 Mount Vernon Avenue  Alexandria, VA 22301Not actually in the District, but famous nevertheless. Pork Barrel BBQ was featured on Shark Tank and became a media sensation for being one of the first BBQ sauces to offer gluten free alternatives.

Hill Country BBQ
410 7th Street NW, Washington, DC 20004
Friends from Texas have told us its the best around. Plus the promise of live music! How have we never been? This might have to make it onto our summer bucket list (that is currently non-existant).

Do you have a favorite BBQ place? Or a favorite BBQ recipe? I would love to try it out. If you've shared it on your blog, be sure to leave a link in the comments!

Free Summer Fun in DC

Washington DC is full of fun things to do all year round and summer gets even better. Here are my top choices for free music and movies:

Music:

Millennium Stage - Every evening the Kennedy center offers a free concert or performance on their side stage.

The Marine Evening Parade at Barracks Row - Friday evenings throughout the summer for a healthy dose of patriotism. Reservations recommended.

Jazz in the Garden - Friday evenings at the National Gallery of Art. Sit by the fountain, enjoy jazz and lots of company. Admission is free. The cafe sells wine. Crowds arrive early, be sure to bring a blanket and a picnic.

Twilight Tattoo - military concerts every Friday night near Iwo Jima. First come, first serve.

Yards Park - The recently transformed Navy Yard park features outdoor concerts every Friday night. The area food trucks have picked up on the crowds, so food options abound.

Movies:

DC is home of outdoor movies with Screen on the Greens featured in NoMa, Rosslyn, Capitol Riverfront, Crystal City, U Street, and more, but the main attraction is movies on the National Mall (located between 7th and 12th Street). This year’s series schedule:
  • Monday, July 16th: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
  • Wednesday, July 25th: It Happened One Night
  • Monday, July 30th: From Here to Eternity
  • Monday, August 6th: Psycho
Be sure to check out other screens throughout the region!

The Best Pizza In DC

As every college student knows, pizza is one of the five food groups. But it is not until you enter the upper levels of maturity that you can appreciate the best ingredients that artisan pizzas offer. Without further ado, here are the top five places every DC summer intern MUST eat pizza this summer:

We, The Pizza
305 Pennsylvania Avenue, SE
A historical play on words, We, The Pizza offers delicious fare steps from the Capitol building. Hearty pies (seen above) feature unique topping combinations like BBQ pulled pork and fried onion rings or the mother-load of all greek pizza. You may even recognize a famous face while dining, Spike Mendolsohn from Season 4 of Top Chef, owns and operates the place. He can often be seen behind the counter. While there, be sure to sample one of the homemade italian sodas.

Jumbo Pizza
1344 U Street, NW
The name says it all. At Jumbo Pizza, a 24 hour eatery, offers you the biggest slice in the city. You won't find the range of high quality toppings, but sometimes bigger truly is better right? A must stop, if only just to check off the list.

2 Amys
3715 Macomb Street, NW
Located North of Georgetown and not metro accessible, 2 Amys is worth the trip. The perfect place to bring your parents when they visit or to rest after a day of fun on M Street. 2 Amys offers authentic Italian Neapolitan pizza.

Matchbox
713 H Street, NW
With locations downtown, on Capitol Hill and now Rockville, Matchbox is bound to be semi-convenient to you, not matter where you are. They offer authentic wood-fired pizza along with a full menu of American grub, from sliders to salads. Matchbox is one of our favorite restaurants to bring a crowd and a great stop along the tourist path for out-of-town guests.

Seventh Hill
327 7th Street, SE
Sharing a kitchen with its sister restaurant, an upscale french bistro, Seventh Hill gives you high quality, artisan pizza without the fuss. Casual outdoor seating, help yourself water carafes, and a well curated beer selection sets the tone for a relaxing evening. Pizzas names after DC landmarks featuring ingredients like pesto, tapenade, or goat cheese. This is my personal choice for pizza in or pizza out. It is always Seventh Hill.
