Free Summer Fun in DC

Washington DC is full of fun things to do all year round and summer gets even better. Here are my top choices for free music and movies:

Music:

Millennium Stage - Every evening the Kennedy center offers a free concert or performance on their side stage.

The Marine Evening Parade at Barracks Row - Friday evenings throughout the summer for a healthy dose of patriotism. Reservations recommended.

Jazz in the Garden - Friday evenings at the National Gallery of Art. Sit by the fountain, enjoy jazz and lots of company. Admission is free. The cafe sells wine. Crowds arrive early, be sure to bring a blanket and a picnic.

Twilight Tattoo - military concerts every Friday night near Iwo Jima. First come, first serve.

Yards Park - The recently transformed Navy Yard park features outdoor concerts every Friday night. The area food trucks have picked up on the crowds, so food options abound.

Movies:

DC is home of outdoor movies with Screen on the Greens featured in NoMa, Rosslyn, Capitol Riverfront, Crystal City, U Street, and more, but the main attraction is movies on the National Mall (located between 7th and 12th Street). This year’s series schedule:
  • Monday, July 16th: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid
  • Wednesday, July 25th: It Happened One Night
  • Monday, July 30th: From Here to Eternity
  • Monday, August 6th: Psycho
Be sure to check out other screens throughout the region!

  1. I wish you had been doing this four years ago while I was living in DC as an intern! We loved Jazz in the Garden though! We always went after work on Fridays :)

  2. Movies on the Mall? How awesome! And wine and jazz at the Gallery of Art, sounds like so much fun! We aren't too far away. Would make for an exciting date night to get out of our area and head that way!
