Football Fridays: Super Bowl Prep

As the season is winding down, I am gearing up my Super Bowl party prep!

How about you? Will you be hosting a party? Watching the game some where else? If the team(s) your household roots for still in the running? Whatever you plan to be doing, here are a few pointed from party planner extraordinaire, Brooke of Lemon Drop Shop.

Our family is not big on watching sports, football included. My husband will watch a game occasionally, but we do not check out game time before we schedule our lives. Superbowl is just an excuse for a party, in my opinion. But there is certainly nothing wrong with that, is there?

Party, you say? What more do you need than chips and dip and a cooler full of beer, you ask!?

Well, some folks like me may be hoping for just a little something more. Here are my ideas to make Superbowl Sunday be more than just a regular game day. As far as a theme (I love themes, and "superbowl" just isn't quite enough for me to latch onto), some of my current favorites are bar/buffet themes such as chili, baked potato, mini-burger, pretzel, popcorn or even a simple sandwich bar. These ideas are great as far a prep is concerned and also as far as your guests bringing something. For example, if you are having a chili bar, guests could bring cheese, sour cream and the like.

chili // potato // slider // pretzel recipe // popcorn // sandwich

Now what to do with decor...Brown bag it. Yep. I think it really can be as simple as that. Get a roll of brown kraft paper and go crazy. Begin by covering your table and other serving surfaces with kraft paper. Once you lay food out, you can grab a sharpie and write next to the dish what you are serving. Next, hang a strip of paper on a spare wall and use this for your guests to write their Superbowl predictions (see above inspiration use for New Years).

Use paper lunch sacks to hold your snacks, such as pretzels, chips and popcorn. You could also lay out individual sized kraft bags for guests to fill up with these snacks for themselves instead of using a plate. Talk about easy clean-up!

Football Fridays {conference championships}

As the season is winding down, I am gearing up my Super Bowl party prep!

the game:

NFC Championship Game - Sunday 3:00: San Francisco 49ers vs. Atlanta Falcons - the 49ers are my pick to win this year (don't forget to vote for your pick below). They have the rough and tumble attitude that serves them well in tight situations. The question is, how will they match up against the Falcon's long passing game? Will the passing that made Atlanta the best team in the regular season carry them to the Super Bowl?

AFC Championship Game - Sunday 6:30: New England Patriots vs. Baltimore Ravens - the Ravens had a late season shift with the addition of offensive coordinator Jim Caldwell adapting to the no huddle offensive in which QB Joe Flacco seems to thrive. If he can get his three key receivers on the same page, Baltimore has a chance at winning. New England on the other hand will have the benefit of a home town crowd, but they will have to make up for the loss of their injured tight end Ron Gronkowski. In this game you can expect to see a good deal of pressure on both QBs - blitz, attack, and sack.



the talking point:

The AFC Championship game is a rematch of last year when the Ravens kicker blew the chance to go to overtime. Will they be able to overcome history?

Ravens' QB Joe Flacco claims he is among the "elite" quarterbacks. Will he prove this by making it all the way this year?

Raven's Ray Lewis is retiring. Will his career have a story book ending with another trip to the Super Bowl?

Will home town advantage actually boost New England's chance of winning? Does it ever make a difference in the play offs?

Atlanta was the best team in the regular season. Will they continue their run?

Some reports are calling Atlanta, the "NFL's Team of Destiny," is their underdog status over played?

49ers rookie QB has video-game like moves. Will Colin Kaepernick's "rookie" status finally show through?

The 49ers have perfected the pass rush in their past several games. Will Matt Ryan and the Atlanta Falcons be able to adapt and move the ball quickly?

How many times will the announcers refer to the "replacement refs" that haven't been on the field since September?

Football Fridays {week fifteen}

As the season is winding down, I am gearing up my superbowl predictions. In two weeks we will have a voting to determine who you all think will win the superbowl. {disclaimer: I am still sore about last night's Eagles game...let's not talk about it, okay?}

the game:

Sunday: Chicago Bears vs. Green Bay Packers - Chicago needs to win this game to keep their hopes at the playoffs alive.

Sunday: New York Giants vs. Atlanta Falcons - Atlanta has cinched their playoff spot, New York is still fighting to secure theirs, but history shoes the Giants play better when they are in the thick of the fight going into the post season.

Sunday: Houston Texans vs. Indianapolis Colts - Houston has also secured their playoff bid while the Colts are still fighting. Can Andrew Luck face the pressure of late season games and take his team all the way?

Sunday Night: San Francisco 49ers vs. New England Patriots - This game could be a preview of Superbowl XLVII as both the 49ers and the Patriots are in the number 2 spot in their respective divisions. Either way, this is sure to be a good game.


the talking point:

Who will be securing (or blowing) their shot at the play offs this week? How many rookie QBs will be heading into the post season? Start thinking about your NFC and AFC Championship picks.

Football Fridays {week thirteen}

Welcome back to Football Fridays! Every other week, join us for game insights, spectator commentary, and recipes to make the fall season more than just "man time."

the game:

Sunday: Minnesota Vikings vs. Green Bay Packers - forever a strong rivalry, which mid-west powerhouse will come out on top this week? Green Bay is looking solid behind Aaron Rodgers whereas The Vikings have been missing easy plays. Safe to say the Packers should bring home the win.

Sunday: Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Baltimore Ravens - a younger rivalry than the one above, but fierce nevertheless. Just like two weeks ago, this game will be a battle. Likely to be one of the best games to watch this weekend.

Sunday Night & Monday Night will be all about the NFC East

Sunday Night: Philadelphia Eagles vs. Dallas Cowboys - As a depressed fan, I am not in the right mind to say anything of substance about this game. I will be watching with one eye closed.

Monday Night: Washington Redskins vs. New York Football Giants - A great game. The big question around the league, will Justin Tuck (Giants) think RG III is faster than Michael Vick? Look for the Redskin's rookie quarterback to be making some impressive moves on the field this week.


the talking point:

Did the Saints loose their playoff hopes last night? Without head coach, Sean Payton, (suspended due to Bounty Gate) the team has seemed to fall apart. Is Drew Breese not a strong enough leader to hold the crew together? Does this season put a damper on his entire career and any potential to be a hall of fame QB?

The Falcons improved to 11-1 - who saw that coming at the beginning of the season?

Would a win against Dallas save Andy Reid's job?

The 49ers will continue to start their back up QB, Colin Kaepernick. Starter Alex Smith was on fire earlier this season, even being named player of the week until he suffered a concussion. Now cleared for play, he has "lost his job" as starting QB. Here is the controversy: if a player might loose his spot due to injury (not poor play), should he hide his injury? What impact does this coaching decision have on the progress the NFL has had with concussion safety recently? Should a starting player get his position back as soon as he is cleared to play? You can bet the player's union will be all over this in the off season.


the food:

Growing up, my parents would gather with friends on the weekends for game nights. This dip was always on the menu and has long since become a family favorite. Tip: it is also a great item to bring for a work party/potluck because it is no-measure/no-cook and you can pull it together in a few minutes just before the festivities begin!

ingredients:
1 onion (or half an onion, whatever you have on hand)
1 tub of sour cream - regular size container
1 jar of salsa - your favorite, regular size container
1 bag of shredded cheese - we prefer the thicker shred
1 bag of tortilla chips

directions:
dice as much onion as you would like, as fine as you would like
scoop out some of the sour cream into a class serving dish
stir the diced onion right into the remaining sour cream in the container (less mess)
scoop the rest of the sour cream into the serving dish and spread to form an even layer
spread the salsa over the sour cream - whole jar!
sprinkle with shredded cheese
serve with tortilla chips

this recipe is best made immediately before serving, or keep it in the fridge to cool for up to one hour

Football Fridays {week eleven}

Welcome back to Football Fridays! Every other week, join us for game insights, spectator commentary, and recipes to make the fall season more than just "man time."

the game:

This is the last week of byes. After this, each team plays every week until their season is over.
Byes This Week: Minnesota Vikings, New York Giants, Seattle Seahawks, Tennessee Titans all have "off" this week.

Sunday: Philadelphia Eagles vs. Washington Redskins - this will be a battle of the rookie quarterbacks, with both teams trying to make it to the post season. Both teams are 3-6, the Eagles with a 5 game losing streak. This game is gonna be ugly.

Sunday: Indianapolis Colts vs. New England Patriots - All will see how Luck fares against one of the best defenses in the league. For Indianapolis fans, this game is a big rivalry. Go Colts!

Sunday Night: Baltimore Ravens vs. Pittsburgh Steelers - Forever a strong rivalry. This game will be battled in the stands between fans just as much as it will be on the playing field. Either way, this will likely be the most exciting game to watch all weekend.

Monday Night: Chicago Bears vs. San Francisco 49ers - Sometimes I wonder how certain teams get the Monday night slot. We will just leave it at that.


the talking point:

This might be the best round of rookie quarterbacks since the 2004 draft with Eli Manning, Philip Rivers, and Ben Roethlisberger. Now we have Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III (RG3), Brandon Weeden and Nick Foles who got his first game action with the Eagles last week when Vick went down with a concussion.

RG3 and Foles will face off (assuming Vick is still sidelined) to continue to battle the NFC East, but Andrew Luck is the real story. His name is being tossed around as rookie of the week. And could he be the next Peyton Manning for Indy fans?


the food:

My absolute favorite, buffalo chicken dip. In fact, it has become such a family staple, my brother who is still in college has begun to make it each weekend. You know something is good when your brother calls you from the grocery store for a list of ingredients! Here are some of his pictures of his cooking skills. (I am sure you could make your version look much nicer!)

ingredients:
8oz cream cheese, softened
1/2 cup blue cheese salad dressing
1/2 cup of franks hot sauce, the best there is!
1/2 cup crumbled blue cheese
1 bag of shredded mozzarella cheese
1 lb boneless, skinless chicken breast, diced into bite size cubes

directions:
pre-heat oven to 350°
cook and brown chicken in a skillet over medium high heat
as chicken begins to brown, add hot sauce
in a separate bowl, mix cream cheese, salad dressing and blue cheese chunks
stir in chicken with remaining sauce that has not yet soaked up
pour mixture into baking dish - any size/depth will do
sprinkle top with mozz cheese - amount will vary based on the surface area of your baking dish
bake for 20 minutes

extras:
serve with carrot sticks, celery, tortilla chips, or sliced baguettes



the tradition:


I am excited about Thanksgiving next week. My in-laws have a great room that everyone gathers in, with a wood stove, and it is perfect for post-meal lounging. I am looking forward to curling up with my family and watching some football. Are you planning to watch any of these games?

Sunday: Arizona Cardinals vs. Green Bay Packers - I am not a Packers fan, lets clear that up right here. In fact their domination over the eagles on January 9, 2011 might be to blame for my emergency c-section. But that is besides the point. This should be a great game.

Sunday: Pittsburgh Steelers vs. New York Football Giants - Giants are on top of the NFC East right now, they need to pull out this win to continue to prove they are the best.

Sunday Night: Dallas Cowboys vs. Atlanta Falcons - The Falcons have the stronger QB in Matt Ryan, the question is can their younger team beat the more season Cowboys? I sure hope so.

Monday Night: Philadelphia Eagles vs. New Orleans Saints - Oh Philadelphia, win this one, and win it big. Please.


the talking point:

I said this last week, but it is never too early to start planning. Impress your guy by asking how you can accommodate him watching the game on Turkey Day (perfect commercial break conversation). These teams will be playing:

Sunday: New York Football Giants vs. Washington Redskins - Like all NFC East teams, these two have a history and a vicious rivalry. The Giants are the reigning Superbowl Champs, but they lost both of their games against the Redskins last year.

Sunday: Arizona Cardinals vs. Minnesota Vikings - At face value, the Vikings are the more dominant team, with Adrian Peterson back in action this season and a host of young players tearing up their running and receiving game, but the Cardinals need this game to regain the momentum they have lost the past few weeks.

Sunday Night: Pittsburgh Steelers vs. Cincinnati Bengals - The Bengals have a habit of unexpected upsets, but the Steelers rarely arrive at a game unprepared. You can count on Pittsburgh to grab the win.

Monday Night: Detroit Lions vs. Chicago Bears - If the Bears can pull out another win, they will show they are a force to be considered with and deserve their spot at the top of the NCF North.

Football Fridays {week five}

the game:

Games This Week: Detroit, Oakland, Dallas, and Tampa Bay all have "off" this week.

Sunday: Atlanta Falcons vs. Washington Redskins - This game will be a battle of the QB, Matt Ryan vs. RG3. Expect a high scoring game full of excitement.

Sunday: Philadelphia Eagles vs. Pittsburg Steelers - if Philadelphia stays true to form, they will step up their play against a stronger team. This game promises to be aggressive, and perhaps even a bit chippy.

Sunday Night: San Diego Chargers vs. New Orleans Saints - San Diego is likely to dominate this game. New Orleans is still struggling from the suspensions imposed in light of bounty scandal, and is not looking capable of a recovery this season.

Monday Night: Houston Texans vs. New York Jets - The Jets are amid controversy and blame - a team expecting to be a standout is struggling with finger pointing going every with direction. The commentary during this game with be heavy on the story of what is happening to the Jet's front office.

the talking point:

Its breast cancer awareness month, and the NFL is sporting pink in full force. From ribbons on jerseys to neon pink gloves, your favorite teams will be adding an extra color to their uniform all month long.


the food:

If you are anything like me, you buy some food with the greatest intentions and promptly forget about it. For whatever reason, bread goes stale in our home. Panade is now my favorite weekend meal if I do happen to find some rock hard bread laying around.

Ingredients:
 - leftover bread, the harder the better
 - diced, sauteed veggies, 2-4 cups depending on how much bread you have. I use onions and peppers, but anything you need to use up with work!
 - 2-4 cups chicken or vegetable broth

Directions:
 - slice and toast the bread cubes in the oven - sometimes I drizzle with olive oil
 - while bread is toasting, saute veggies.
 - heat broth in a small sauce pan
 - once bread is ready layer bread, veggies, bread
 - por broth over the top, being sure to soak the top layer of bread (the more broth the better!)
 - bake at 350 for 35 minutes, uncovered so top get golden brown

Serving:
 - serve with crock-pot meatballs or roast beef and a healthy portion of cheese for a rustic, football worthy meal

Football Fridays {week three}

We a mixing Football Fridays up a bit this week with a look at college football. Jill is here from My Meek Life to share what she knows about her favorite game. I am so happy to have her, and I think you will be too!

Thanks, Shannon for letting me post today. This is fun! Disclaimer: I'm no expert. But I do love the game! Growing up in a college town with zero pro teams around, the University Is. Who. You. Cheer For. If you can relate, live near a great college team, or just have lots of school spirit, this post is for you! For those of you less familiar with putting all of your eggs of happiness into one basket carried by a team of 18-22 year old guys... welcome to the madness.

Note: College Football fans are obsessed over rankings, because usually if you're ranked No. 1 and No. 2 at the end of the season, you play for the National Championship. Other high ranking teams may play in another big "Bowl Game." (The controversy is that computers and polls rank the teams, and the system can seem unfair.) Last year's champion and runner up (Alabama and LSU) are out in front again, and the rest are looking to prove themselves as worthy contenders. During the first three weeks of play, we're learning who's worth their salt in this race... and who's already out of gas. This Saturday, look for a few of these teams to pull ahead.

The Game

ACC: Clemson @ Florida State

Florida State is having a moment, shutting out Wake Forest last week 52-0, but they need to watch their backs against the Clemson Tigers, who won the match up last year, during a rough patch for the Seminoles. Will the FSU defense stay strong to overpower the Tiger offense?  Who will prove to be the leader of the ACC?

Big 12: Kansas State @ Oklahoma

Oklahoma traditionally has a strong team and has been quietly striding through their first few games this year. I expect them to win and maybe hit that No. 3 spot in the rankings. If they don't just win, but win big, they may be seen as the biggest competition for the No. 1 ranked Crimson Tide. 

Big 10: Michigan @ Notre Dame

Michigan lost their season opener to Alabama by more than expected and the Air Force gave them a run for their money the next week. Meanwhile, Notre Dame wasn't expected to be great this year, but surprised Michigan State fans with their win last week. So this game is kind of a wild card. I'm rooting for the Fighting Irish to continue to shake things up.

The Talking Point

"Alabama is in a class all their own. Is there any way they could be knocked out of the No. 1 spot this year?" The past 6 National Champions have been SEC teams, and they are making their case for this year too. 

Make your picks for Saturday winners and statement makers. Remember, Florida State and Oklahoma have been stomping opponents, but this week will be the first BIG game for each. Stanford and Notre Dame are also undefeated, each pulling off an upset last week. How long can they keep up it up? (Stanford has it easier this week.)

Pull up this video. My poor little Razorbacks have become a MAJOR laughing stock this year after extremely high expectations. Lots of scandal. Its such a mess. 

The Food

Since we're mixing it up this week on Football Friday, I'll turn from savory to sweet in the food section. Actually, these Peanut Butter Pretzel Bites*  are sweet and salty and peanut butter-y, and creamy and crunchy rolled (and frozen and dipped) into one! I found this recipe on Pinterest (where else?) so all credit goes to the site I've linked to. *college football connection: minus the pretzels, these are pretty much buckeyes, a tasty treat AND the Ohio State mascot.

the game:

Games This Week: no byes, every team plays

Sunday: New York Football Giants vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers - Since reigning Superbowl champs (the Giants) lost their opening game to the Dallas Cowboys, they need to win and win big on Sunday to save face.

Sunday: Philadelphia Eagles vs. Baltimore Ravens - the battle of the birds may only be a big game in my household. Both teams have historically been at the top of their conferences and have strong defences. But unless Michael Vick (Eagles QB) stops throwing interceptions, the Ravens could stomp all over Philadelphia.

Sunday Night: Detroit Lions vs. San Francisco 49s - neither team has been a powerhouse for the past several years, but they have had steady improvements and either could be a breakout team this season. This game will set the tone for where they go next!

Monday Night: Denver Broncos vs. Atlanta Falcons - Once again, Peyton Manning will be trying to prove that he is still in the game. Likewise, Falcon QB Matt Ryan is trying to prove that he is MVP potential. This should be a high action, high scoring game, and a lot of fun to watch.

the talking point:

The NFL referees are on strike - commentators are referring to the new refs as "The Replacements." If the men in your life are upset about the call...make a smart comment about where these refs came from such as. "Have they ever seen a football game before?" or "Even I could have made that call!"

Penalties were rampant last week. If the flag continues to get thrown a lot, your one line zinger: "These guys get paid too much to make this many mistakes" or "This isn't the off-season anymore fellas, time to quit being lazy and get back in shape!"


the food:

I have posted this recipe a hundred times, but Kentucky-style Pulled BBQ Chicken is such a weekend staple in our house. You have to try it out!

I won't always have a gift suggestion, but odds are, if you are reading this post, you might be looking for a football oriented gift in your future. Football Fridays {week one}

Welcome to Football Fridays! Here you will find everything you need to know to make your football filled weekend a huge success. I will give you info on the big games, a few clutch comments to add to the banter and even a recipe to make you every one's favorite host.

the game:

College football is generally on Saturdays. Admittedly, I grew up in Philadelphia, where college football basically doesn't exist, so I am still learning about this whole new world. So these posts will generally be about the NFL. However, I would love for you to help me out in the comment section and share your college football genius with me!

NFL games are usually played, Thursday night, all day Sunday, and Monday night. However, the NFL season started this past Wednesday with the Cowboys at the NY Football Giants - this was a big game. See talking points for more info.

Games This Week: every team plays this week

Sunday: Philadelphia Eagles at Cleavland Browns - The Eagles are once again trying to prove they are actually a good football team. Although they have had winning records for the past several years, they haven't won a Superbowl since 1960. Yeah, its been a while.

Sunday Night: The Pittsburgh Steelers at the Denver Broncos - Pittsburgh quarterback Ben Roethlisberger is younger than Peyton Manning and has more Superbowl Rings. Peyton is still trying to prove he is one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL (despite his injuries). Denver really wants to win this game!

Monday Night: The Cincinnati Bengals at the Baltimore Ravens - The Ravens typically have one of the strongest defences in the NFL. The Bengals have been an erratic team over the past few years, some weeks they are good, other weeks they aren't. Baltimore should dominate this game.

Monday Night, Game 2: San Diego Chargers at the Oakland Raiders. Other than being a California battle, this isn't a very big game.



the talking point:

Remember how I said the first game was already played? Well the Superbowl Champ NY Football Giants lost to the Cowboys. The Superbowl champs hardly ever lose their first game of the following season. So you can say..."Can you believe the Giants lost to the Cowboys?" And if you want to take it a step further: "That totally shakes up the NFL East (their division) in week one!"

"How do you think Payton Manning will do on a new team? He has been a Colt for so long, can he ever really become a Denver Bronco?" and "Payton is so new to Denver, can he even consider this home field advantage?"

The NFL referees are on strike. So if the men in your life are upset about the call...make a smart comment about where these refs came from such as. "Have they ever seen a football game before?" or "Even I could have made that call!"


the food:

This is one of my favorite football snack foods. My friend Christie first introduced this recipe to me a few years ago. There are a quite a few variations swirling around the internet, it is just that good.

Ingredients:
1lb. breakfast sausage - or hot for an extra kick - browned and drained. (I think the log is easier than the links, but both work just fine)
8oz. package of cream cheese
16oz. can of rotel (or other brand of tomato and green chilies)

The sausage can be browned the morning of the game, or even the day before. About 60 minutes to game time, toss all three ingredients into a crock pot and cook on low for 90 minutes. You can always speed up the cook time by increasing the heat setting. I use my 3 qt. crock pot for this recipe. It can easily be doubled or halved to suit the crowd.

Serve with chunks of bread or your favorite tortilla chips.

Mark's Birthday

Mark is a December baby so each year I try to go all out with something bigger and better than the year for his birthday. This year I surprised him with Eagles vs. Redskins tickets here in Washington. It was a blast! We sat in the Loge section with comfy heated seats, an all you can eat buffet and prime viewing of the fantastic game. It was a memorable expereince and a terrific way to celebrate Mark's birthday (even though the Skins won). But now I have the itch...I want to more games next year...we will just have to wait and see about that!

November News

Can you believe that November is over? Already! I cannot believe it, and actually have been wondering where it went. Since I have not been a very diligent blogger, I will give you a rundown of my November highlights:

1. Mike and Brooke came to visit DC! To read more about there click: here!

2. Miracle of the Marine Corps - Mark and I have the privilege of going to the Navy vs. Temple Football game in Annapolis. Navy came back to win the game after a 7-27 deficit in the 4th quarter. It was an incredible experience! Here are some photos from the game:


3. Phil and Nate - Our friends, who are brothers, are hiking the Appalachian Trail passed through Virginia. We were able to catch up with them and spend some quality time with Warren and Lindsey. Warren and Mark hiked for the day with the guys while Lindsey and I hung out and enjoyed great deals at the Leesburg outlets. The guys brought Phil and Nate back to Warren and Lindsey's house to get a warm night's sleep. Then we returned them to the trail in the morning. Here is a photo of Mark and me with Phil and Nate:

4. Our car reached a major milestone: 100,000 miles! We had a mini celebration!

5. Thanksgiving - Family: more to come on the actual family time later.

6. Thanksgiving - Friends: the long weekend gave us the opportunity to see lots of friends. Friday Night we hung out with Mike and Kelsey and were able to meet up with some Gordon Lacrosse alums - Jon and Ben. I was also able to meet Jon's girlfriend Steph and she is awesome! We played Quizzo at Christopher's in Wayne PA and we kicked butt! On Saturday we drove out to D-town to visit Faith, Kyle, and projectile puking Noah who was quite content to throw up repeatedly. All the while, he didn't skip a beat. Faith says that her life is free birth control, and this visit I would have to agree. But Noah is still the cutest little tike around. Then we got to see Sarah's new apartment in West Chester and it is great! We got Philly Cheesesteaks and reminiced about too many funny memories. Then we met up later with Kristie for our High School Reunion. I am not sure how Mark put up with the three of us all night. Here is a photo of the three of us:

7. The last and BEST part of November: Dillon Ashlyn Simpler arrived at 1:47 am Sunday, November 30th! Perfect timing for Mark and I to see her on our way back to DC. We are so excited for Tommy and Fallon, first time parents. Holding Dillon was incredible - especially as she wasn't even 12 hours old yet! Note: she already looks like Tommy! (there will definitly be more details to come on this one!)

Football 101: Only One Game

Only one game has my attention this weekend, and I believe it is making me sick to my stomach. The Philadelphia Eagles host the NY Football Giants in Philly at the Link for Prime Time Sunday Night Football - cue Faith Hill. Ahhh...the suspense. I believe the Eagles will win (and that my belief will help them get there!)

Here are the stats going into the game:

NY Giants:
7-1 (only loss to the Browns)
Traditionally perform very well on the road
Head Coach Tom Coughlin is 7-4 against Philly
Giants have won 5 of the last 6 against the Eagles

Philadelphia Eagles:
5-3 (two within the NFC East)
Have undeniable home field advantage with fierce fans
Head Coach Andy Reid is 9-11 against NY
The Eagles are on the road to redemption after the Giants swept the series last season

What do you thing the outcome of this game will be?

Football 101: Safety

Safety may mean a lot of things but in football it is both a way to score and a position. First, as a way to score: it is the only way a team without the football can score, and it results in two points. It is rare, but when a safety occurs, it is typically when the defense sacks the quarterback in his own endzone.

Second, the position: a player that is on defense and plays behind the line of scrimmage (in the backfield). This kind of safety has a bigger impact on the game. Safeties are a key players, and typically pretty high profile. Odds are if you know a few names of football players, some of they are safties. Below are my predictions for the week as well as the names of safeties to keep an eye on this weekend.

Week 9: My Top Games

New York Jets at Buffalo Bills

Farve hasn’t lived up to his career this year and each week is looking more and more like an old man. I predict the Bills will be able to roll on the Jets this weekend. Safety: New York Jet Kerry Rhodes (#25)

Baltimore Ravens at Cleveland Browns

This is becoming quite the year for Browns fans. Their team is looking halfway decent. This would be good win for the Browns to put under their belts and the Ravens have improved since last year. I would love to see the Browns win this game, but it is going to be a close one. Safety: Baltimore Raven Ed Reed (#20)

Green Bay Packers at Tennessee Titans

Will the Titans go 8-0 and have the best record in the NFL? That is a lot of pressure for this organization, but the Packers have lack the ability to threaten teams this year. I am pulling for the Titans. (because where on earth did they come from?) Safety: Green Bay Packer Atari Bigby (#20)

Arizona Cardinals at St. Louis Rams

The rams are probably the most unpredictable team in the NFL this season. Week after week they stump me. I am guessing they will beat the Cardinals, but my guess on this one isn’t worth much. Safeties: Arizona Cardinal Adrian Wilson (#24) and St. Louis Ram Corey Chavous (#20)

Dallas Cowboys at New York Giants

The Giants need to win this one; it is a HUGE NFC East rivalry. Heck, being an Eagles fan, I would like to see Dallas lose every game. The Cowboys have a bunch of lose cannons on their team. They can only win if they all get firing together. But the Giants should be able to squeek this one out. Safeties: Dallas Cowboy Roy Williams (#11) will be out of the game this week due to injury but New York Giant James Butler (#37) will be ready to play

Philadelphia Eagles at Seattle Seahawks

Once Coach Holgren announced this would be his last year, his season fell apart. Then again, the Seahawks were never poised to be great. Please Philadelphia, do not disappoint me! The Eagles should win this game with confidence. Safeties: Philadelphia Eagle Brian Dawkins (#20) and Seattle Seahawk

Sunday Night
New England Patriots at Indianapolis Colts

Both of these teams have been considered powerhouse for the past several season but 2008 leaves them fighting to stay in the game. For the Colts this is a must win game if they hope for a chance at the playoffs. The Patriots want to win to prove that they can succeed, even without Tom Brady. Since the Colts have more on the line, I am guessing they will pull this out. Safeties: New England Patriot Rodney Harrison (#37) will be out for the remainder of the season but Indianapolis Colt Bob Sanders (#21) will be back in action this game

Monday Night:

Pittsburgh Steelers at Washington Redskins

This is probably the city where the Steelers will have the most fans at an away game, but they are battered and bruised. They have faced every defensive powerhouse in the NFL this season and have the injury report to prove it. Safeties: Pittsburgh Steeler Troy Polamalu (#43) and Washington Redskin LaRon Landry (#30)

Philly Sports Top 10

It is no secret that I am a Philadelphia sports fan. Philadelphia had an incredible weekend for sports. There is so much I want to write about, but I will spare you and limit my excitement to a Top 10:

1. Three Home Games in one weekend! What could be more beautiful?

2. Eagles’ wide receiver, Kevin Curtis is back on the field. This weekend he played in his first game of the season (Curtis was injured in the preseason).

3. Philadelphia Pitcher Jamie Moyer makes his first World Series appearance at age 45 and proved to baseball fans everywhere that he is still young at heart. Pitching 6+ incredible innings and making a diving play in an effort to get an out at 1st. Unfortunately the play wasn’t called in his favor, but who else knows a 45 year old that can dive on the ground like that? (PS the Umpire later admitted that he was wrong when he called the Ray’s Crawford safe)

4. Run McNabb, Run! Donovan proved he still knew how to move on the field!

5. Howard got his groove back. During the 4th game, Ryan Howard finally started hitting the ball to left field, and succeeded in getting two out of the park! This was a long time coming after a relative hitting draught for Howard this post season.

6. The odd infield single hit by Carlos Ruiz World Series game 3 that scored Philly the win!

7. Andy Reid celebrated his 100th win with the Philadelphia Eagles

8. Heeled Ribs for Wizard Westbrook! This weekend, he certainly played like he was healthy with a career-best 167 yards rushing, 22 carries, and 6 catches for 42 more yards leading the Eagles to their win over Atlanta.

9. Phillies pitcher Joe Blanton hit a Homerun: his first ever and in the World Series to boot. This was only Blanton’s 2nd hit of the season, and the first World Series Homerun from a pitcher since 1974, talk about unexpected! Oh yeah, and he also pitched a heck of a game.

10. Philadelphia has a chance to get its first major title in more than 25 years!

Yeah...I am excited!

Football 101: The Quarterback

This week’s games are all about the QB and the QB pressure. Here are a few terms and definitions that announcers frequently use when talking about this topic:

Audible – when the play is changed at the line of scrimmage (before the snap) by calling out (hence audible) a set of signals. You can usually tell this is going on because there is a lot of commotion around the football

Blitz – when someone from the defensive team pressures the quarterback behind the line of scrimmage to force a tackle or to hurry the pass

False Start – when someone of offense moves before the ball is snapped – this results in a 5 yard penalty

Pass Protection – the blocking scheme used by offensive players to keep the defense from getting to the quarterback on passing plays

Pitch - when the quarterback tosses the ball to a running back who is moving laterally (horizontally) away from him

Pocket – the area of protection around the quarterback created by his offensive line when he drops back to pass

Pump Fake - the quarterback fakes a throw in an effort to move the defense away from the ultimate receiver

Quarterback Sneak – when the quarterback receives the snap from center and immediately runs or jumps forward

Roughing the Passer - flagrantly running into or hitting the quarterback after the ball has been passed or thrown, often called when the quarterback is hit in the head – this results in a 15 yard penalty

Big Games - Week 8

Tampa Bay Bucs at Dallas Cowboys:

On paper the cowboys look like the better team, but the Cowboys have suffered big losses this season. Dallas needs to win this game if it wants to stay alive in the NFC East.

Washington Redskins at Detroit Lions:

Washington is certainly the stronger team, but they need to come out and play hard. Detroit has maintained a losing record, but their past few games have come down to the last possession.

San Diego Chargers at New Orleans Saints:

This game will be held across the pond at London's Wembley Stadium in an effort to expand the NFL following throughout the world. Either team could win this game, and no one has an advantage considering the game location. This game is likely to be high scoring and fun to watch.

Atlanta Falcons at Philadelphia Eagles:

The Atlanta rookie QB, Matt Ryan, has been having a great year so far, but this will be his first game against a defense as strong as Philadelphia. If the Eagles are healthy (Westbrook and Curtis back on the field) they should not only win, but dominate this game. The Eagles are coming off a bye week, and have won every game coming of a bye week in Head Coach Andy Reid's 9 years with the franchise.

New York Football Giants at Pittsburgh Steelers:

This is going to be a close game, and likely the most interesting game of the weekend. Both quarterbacks, Ben Roethlisberger and Eli Manning were picked up in the first round of the 2004 Draft and both have Super Bowl titles under their belt (first time this has happened in NFL history). They both understand pressure and how to win big. The Steelers are suffering a few injuries and the Giants tend to play well on the road, so I am going to give this game to the Giants and Eli Manning.

Sunday Night:

There will be no Sunday Night football this week due to the World Series - Go Phillies!!!

Monday Night: Indianapolis Colts at Tennessee Titans:

Peyton Manning and the Colts used to be a powerhouse in the NFL; unfortunately they are having a rocky season this year. The Titans have a winning record and have surprised quite a few football fans. This game could really go either way depending on how the wind blows, but I am guessing the Titans will continue their string of wins – if they win, this will make them 7-0 for the first time in franchise history!

Football 101: Rivalries

To understand football, you have to understand rivalries. There are natural geographic rivalries for example the Green Bay Packers vs. Minnesota Vikings will always be a big game because of their relatively close proximity. But then there are conference rivalries that tend to matter a whole lot more as they determine how teams will be ranked going into the playoff season. This year the NY Football Giants are considered to be the top ranked team in football. They are the defending Superbowl Champions and their opponent in the Superbowl, the New England Patriots has lost their starting quarterback for the Season.

After the Giants, critics would say that the Dallas Cowboys have the best chance to make a Superbowl appearance this year. They have the talent and depth on their team to be the Champions. However they just lost to the Washington Redskins who face the Philadelphia Eagles this week (all NFC East Teams). This is an excellent example of conference rivalries! This game is HUGE this weekend.


Week 5 of the Regular Season:

4 teams have byes: Browns, Jets, Raiders, & Rams – they will not have games this week.

Big games or close match ups:

Tennessee Titans at Baltimore Ravens: Both of these teams are a bit of an unknown this year. The Ravens had a horrible season last year and the Titans weren’t much better. Both have had close games so far this season. The verdict is still out on these two teams.

Atlanta Falcons at Green Bay Packers: This should be a good game. Green Bay is likely to win, especially if their quarterback Aaron Rodgers is fully healthy. (He had a sprained shoulder). The Atlanta quarterback is a rookie and has been doing a good job so far, but he still hasn’t proved he can win on the road.

Indianapolis Colts at Houston Texans: Both are AFC South teams making this a bigger game and the fact that the Colts have been rocky so far this season. Peyton Manning (Colts quarterback) has not been playing as well as he can this season. The Colts were able to rest with a bye last week, so they should win this game. The Colts need to win this game and reassure their fan base that they still have what it takes.

Washington Redskins at Philadelphia Eagles: Big Game of the Day! (Disclaimer: I am a diehard Philadelphia Eagles fan) I want Philly to win this game. The odds are good if they have running back Brian Westbrook healthy and back in the game. The Eagles should be able to win if all the pieces fall into place. Eagles rookie DeSean Jackson has a lot of talent but made two big mistakes last week leading to a loss to the Chicago Bears. Hopefully these mistakes didn’t shake him up too badly and he can perform and continue to prove himself this week. The advantage should go to Philadelphia because they are the home team and have had an incredible year of physical defense so far.

However, the Redskins have proven that they can’t be overlooked. They have done a tremendous job of causing turnovers and quarterback Jason Campbell hasn't thrown an interception yet this year. The Redskings walked into Texas Stadium last week and taught the Cowboys and T.O. a lesson. This game is extra big because Redskins’ first time Head Coach Jim Zorn still needs to prove that he knows how to win and the Eagles need this game to still be contenders in the Beast of the NFC East (meaning all 4 teams in the NFC East are strong this year). The Redskins’ weakness may be: the absence of defensive end Jason Taylor do to a calf injury two weeks ago (compartment syndrome) & too much excitement getting to their head after the Dallas win. Go Eagles!

Buffalo Bills at Arizona Cardinals: Currently Buffalo is undefeated. This makes them the team to beat. The Bills are in the same conference as the Jets and traditional powerhouse NE Patriots. This may be their year to have a strong season (maybe).

New England Patriots at San Francisco 49ers: The Patriots need to prove they can win without quarterback Tom Brady. They might be a bit sluggish from flying across the country.

Sunday Night: Pittsburg Steelers at Jacksonville Jaguars: The Steelers have gotten physically beaten up the last two games against the Ravens and the Eagles. They have a lot of injured players but they are the better team. The Steelers should win, but this will be an interesting game.

Monday Night: Minnesota Vikings at New Orleans Saints: I am actually not sure why these teams get a prime time Monday night football spot. Neither team has a very exciting offense.
