Easter 2014 + Sending Pictures to Family

We had a sweet, filled Easter Sunday. Lots of stops, from our church's first Easter service, to potlucks with our church family and then dinner with neighbors. A few more activities were planned, and then skipped thanks to epic naps. But it was probably for the better. Throughout the day, we quietly reflected on how our every day points to both our need for a savior and his triumphant resurrection.

These two, they look like they are in cahoots with one another!

Over the years, the idea of creating tradition has been belabored here on the blog. We've had fits and starts, but may finally be settling into routines that suits our family. We've settled on some books we read throughout lent, keeping them on our coffee table instead of the book shelf. This is our third year having a low-key Easter egg hunt out front (see 2013, still pregnant with Hudson & 2012). We make an egg casserole the night before so cooking is minimal in the morning -- reducing this helps me be calmer, everyone gets to eat sooner, and as parents, we can be more present with the boys. We also keep our egg hunt simple and try to time it based on when everyone seems to be in a good happy, well-fed state, rather than squeeze it in before church or before naps.

Behr has been telling people there are race cars in Easter eggs, because that is what we did last year. Memory of an elephant, I tell you. To his disappointment, we moved away from the race cars. He loves his race cars, but there isn't much to distinguish between them, and there is even less that points back to God. We opted for Schleich farm animals. The boys were both thrilled by these, and Behr has already been talking about Noah's Ark, God making the rain forests and the jungles and the farms, and how animals have babies too. I am hopeful that over the years as this animal collection will lead to both imaginative play and opportunities for conversation.

A bit about how we keep family in the loop with growing boys on our hands:

I recently realize I am sorely behind in sending letters to the boys grandparents and great-grandparents. Since Behr was little, I have purchased photo cards from Shutterfly to serve as updates with both pictures and a few details about our happenings. Since Hudson joined the party, this has been lacking. But I am picking it up again! Now through Wednesday (4/23) photo cards are on sale from 30-50% off. My favorite is to use the picture folded cards (available in portrait or landscape) so the only design or text on the card is what I choose to add. The quality is great, the grandparents love them. They are easy to share. I order enough for all the family, one for each of the boys "baby boxes" and for Mark and I to each put on on our desks. For ~$1.50 each, they are a huge win for everyone who doesn't get to see the boys every day.

I would love to hear from you. How was your Easter?
Have for formed any new traditions or are you carrying on some from your own childhood?
And if you have kids, how do you keep the extended family in the loop? (especially those not on social media)

Easter Weekend

Our Easter weekend was like a deep breath. Our pace hasn't really slowed since Mark finished grad school. Now with spring finally arriving, we welcomed a weekend in a familiar place with no schedule or to do list. Sometimes you don't realize how fast you are moving until everything around you slows down. We obliged and enjoyed the rest.

Behr loved hunting for Easter eggs. We are thrilled with the wooden eggs and longaberger basket we found on etsy, especially as Behr dropped every egg several times before they finally made their way into the basket. Behr was also estatic about all things Uncle Ben, from washing the car, to golfing, and even using tools to craft a mini lacrosse stick.

On Sunday, we had a mini family photo session, Uncle Ben took 71 pictures, the curse of digital, and a few managed to turn out alright, we even replicated last year's Easter portrait.

On the Hunt

We spent a beautiful Easter weekend with my in-laws on the Eastern Shore of Maryland. We biked, and golfed, and read books, crafted Behr his own mini lacrosse stick cut down from his Uncle Ben's old one, took too many pictures, washed cars, ate good food and enjoyed some front porch rocking, complete with a chair just Behr's size. Can't wait to share more pictures with you tomorrow!

Family Easter Photo

We are moving a bit slower than normal around the house this week.  {actually, we are frantically moving faster, but with less time for things like blogging and photo editting.}  Mark heads off to his 6th residency for grad school, so I head to PA to be with family and visit dear friends.

Phew, now that our schedule has been shared, here is our Easter picture:

And for those of you were were wondering about the status of my pre-easter panic attacks about family traditions and lasting memories...  Easter went very smoothly.  Mark and I had a wonderful moment with Behr early in the morning to discuss the meaning of Easter.  Behr was attentive and well behaved.  My crisis was averted and the day proceeded peacefully.

Happy Easter Eggs

Establishing Easter

As the first major holiday/milestone/tradition making event of Behr's life, I am all spun up about Easter.  I am searching for traditions to begin with our little family.  I am striving for ways to ensure the true meaning of this seemingly randomly selected Sunday is conveyed to our children son.  Meanwhile, Mark keeps reminding me that we still have plenty of time.  Behr won't remember.  We only have one child.  An egg hunt is futile with a child that does not yet crawl or even grasp at toys.  And yet, I am still wound up.

Clothes:  Until now, I have been convinced that baby boys clothes are cuter than baby girls.  Well, this is not the case when it is IMPOSSIBLE to find an Easter outfit.  There are NO easter clothes in stores for baby boys.  I have however found these adorable darlings for Behr's feet.  He might just wear a diaper and these to church on Easter Sunday.

Traditions: How do we marry the traditions that Mark and I each grew up with?  What do we establish for our own family.  How will Behr's first Easter look compared to our second...third...forth child?  How do we keep the focus on church and not the easter bunny?

Visiting Family: How do we see, celebrate, and spend time with everyone while maintaining our own sanity?  Whenever it comes to deciding what to do, I feel like we are deciding who to disappoint.  I want to throw my hands in the air and tell everyone we aren't visiting...that we are just doing our own thing.

Holidays growing up for me always meant a house full of people {20-30 people kind of full} with family traveling from all over the US/world to be together.  Holidays for Mark were often him, his brother, and their parents.  How do I balance the feeling that a gathering of just a few of us is still special, when the norm for me has always been a big crowd?

What do you do?!
