Strawberry Picking In DC

Well, not technically in the district. You will need to find a farmers market for strawberries within the city limits. But I digress. We ventured out to the 'burbs a few weeks ago to find some strawberries and experience a new-to-us farm, Butler's Orchard in Germantown, Maryland. I have driven by this farm for years and never made the turn off the main road to explore.

We picked a hot and sticky day. Behr decided he was petrified of bugs, and newly walking Hudson did not like the feel of grass or hay on his ankles, but he surly enjoyed smashing berried in his face. All in all, the trip was a victory because we made not one but two strawberry rhubarb pies! The boys and I were thrilled with the rolling hills of this orchard and of course the strawberries. We will definitely go back again.

DC area farms we love:

Butler’s Orchard
You haven't missed out yet, pick your own for the season will remain open through this weekend only, closing Monday, June 23rd. The farm might be best known for slides, but I was most excited about their views. One of the only area farms where I truly felt far from the city. Go for the views, stay for the incredible produce.
Open from 8:30am-6pm Tuesday-Friday and 8:30am-5pm Saturday and Sunday, Closed on Mondays (except during strawberry season)

Schlagel Farms
The closest option for those of us on Capitol Hill and eastward. Located in Waldorf, Md, Schlagels is known for their strawberry picking, often opening for pick-your-own before other farms. The farm also boasts an adorable greenhouse for the rest of your city garden needs. And they even serve ice cream.
Open from 8am – 7pm seven days a week.

Homestead Farm
This is a favorite place for us in the fall, but Homestead Farm has a great summer bounty as well. Along with a larger market and strawberry picking, the have many attractions for young kids including pick your own flowers and an array of farm animals including goats, pigs, and even a rooster!
Open from 9am – 5pm seven days a week.

Still didn't find the farm you were looking for? Check out this great list from KidFriendlyDC.

  1. Strawberry picking may be coming to an end, but next up are blueberries, then blackberries, then raspberries!
