CSA Inspired: Great-Grandmother's Blueberry Cake

We look forward to blueberry season in our home.  This year, we were up to our knees so I sought the guidance of my southern friend and excellent baker Beth.  Here is a recipe from her friend's great-grandmother.  When a recipe has been passed around for that long, you know it is good!

cream together 1.5 cups sugar and 1 cup shortening (or half butter half lard).
mix together 4 cups flour, 3 tsp baking powder, 1 tsp salt
beat 1 egg together with 1 1/3 cups milk
alternate adding flour mixture and milk mixture to the sugar
mix in 1 qt blueberries
bake in a 9x13 pan for 50 min in 350 oven

It is super easy and I promise, it taste even better than it looks!

And this little guy "helped me bake" by having a blast in his chair.

  1. I saw your comment on E Tells Tales and wanted to share how much we love our Fisher Price Sleeper too! My little man sleeps in it every night! And I see you are in DC... we live about 30 minutes outside of the city in the suburbs!

    Oh... and that looks DELICIOUS!!
