In vs. Out

It is official. This past week marked the date of longer out than in.  Behr has been "out" for over forty-one weeks and two days. He was a late arrival, but worth the wait.

The time I have spent with Behr in my arms has felt so much longer than the time I was pregnant.  He has grown so much, gaining almost 10 lbs. and 7 inches in length.  The changes and new developments are countless.  But the reality is that he changed even more than I could comprehend during his first forty-one weeks.  Of course I know the facts, he gained 8 pounds and grew 21 inches before birth, inside of me.  And yet, I am not quite sure how to grasp the concept.  There are so many times during early pregnancy that you jut don't "feel pregnant" (even if you are sick as a dog).  But since January 12, there haven't been any days that I didn't feel like a mom.

There is no way to compare these two sets of time.  To say he looks so different today than when he was born would be an understatement compared to the change that occurred from conception to birth.  I cannot wrap my head around the difference between the two phases of this miracle. Nor can I begin to fathom what the next forty-one weeks, months, or years could have in store.

Once this milestone occurred to me, when it was written in my calendar, I began to eagerly anticipate this day.  It is not certain why this chalk mark in time even really matters.  However, at the end of the day it is incredible to reflect on all 82+ weeks of Behr's life and this journey into motherhood.

This little photo montage inspired by my Russell's Orchard photo shoot and re-affirmed by the ever creative Elizabeth during our blogger weekend.

Saturday Shoes: by julie

Have y'all met Julie

p.s. the y'all is for her and her southern roots.
she uses the phrase far more than I do.

If you asked Julie about her favorite pair of shoes, she would likely struggle to pick a single pair.
Instead she would go on about how she loves her converse/chucks taylors.

All 6 pairs!

Don't believe me?

or her post about which pair to get next or even the wee little pair she found her son.

One more picture for good measure

Starting the Conversations

Although I have been blogging for a few years now, I have been keeping a wall between us.  I have been hesitant to share.  Hesitant to let you, incredible readers and fellow bloggers, into the nitty gritty of my life.  I have been keeping you at a distance.

No, it is not because of fear of putting things on the internet or even personal security reasons.  The reason runs much deeper.  In reality, you have gotten as close to me as most other people in my life.  I operate with smiles over coffee, keeping friends at arms length.  I have been burned before.  I've had and lost friendships that hurt.  And so I am fearful of that pain.

I tend to be short on the warm and fuzzy, quick to offer cold hard facts.

But here I am, jumping in with two feet.  Committed to starting the conversations.  True, deep, personal conversations.  Here is my plan:

I have created a formspring account.  Yes, I am jumping on the bandwagon.  But I have received quite a few emails about babies and breast feeding.  You have taken time to seek me out.  Imagine the conversations that would start if I made it easier?  So that is where formspring comes in.  Look up at my top nav bar...way up there..."QUESTIONS" will take you to my formspring.  Ask away.  I am excited to hear what you want to know!

Commenting...and responding.  I respond back in the comments section of my blog posts occasionally.  I am going to start picking it up.  Responding more regularly.  Hoping to make the comment section a bit more conversational.

Email.  Now you have it.  Use it wisely.

Baby Meal Planning: 7-9 Months

Behr eating at six months.
These pictures are old, but I love the intensity of his expression.
After recently seeing them again, I have been dying to use them in a post!

Stepping into the world of baby food has left me with more questions than straight answers.  After hours of internet searching, ending up in dead ends and more confusion, I finally realized that the answers I was looking for aren't searchable.

Each kid likes different foods, different amounts, and at different stages.  But that doesn't help a frantic mom figure out what food to introduce next.  So before I dive into a meal plan, here is a little bit about my food philosophy, and the first foods Behr ate (minus the lamb...we balked at introducing meat).

The purpose of this meal plan is to provide you with ideas that may work for your baby.
As with all recommendations, please follow the advice and guidance of your pediatrician.

{breakfast}

Steel Cut Oats - serve plain, or add purred mango, mashed bananas, or apple sauce.  When serving these plain, I let Behr eat them with his hands, teaching texture and self-feeding.

Plain Whole Milk Yogurt - we currently buy stonyfield, but I hope to make my own someday.  Keep the yogurt plain to teach that not all food has to be sweet and sugary.

Blueberry Smoothie - blend 2/3 cup of frozen blueberries, a peach or nectarine, banana and homemade concord grape juice.  Occasionally we mix in apple sauce or mango.  When making this smoothie, add fruits you would like with blueberries

Sliced Fruit - bananas, apples and kiwis are favorites in our house, and help satisfy Behr while I get my act together in the morning.

{lunch}

Mashed Mint Peas - steam frozen peas and gently pulse through a blender adding mint and parmesan for a delicious mash.

Quinoa - commonly mistaken for a grain, this seed is an excellent source of protein.  Quinoa can be dry and fluffy when prepared, making it hard to eat/swallow at first.  Add cooked/pureed spinach, sweet potato, or beets and olive oil to make a mini casserole that is easier to eat.

Roasted Acorn Squash - left-overs from mom and dad's dinner.  Blend cubed squash with apple sauce and cinnamon to sweeten the deal.

Finger Friendly Veggies - cooked and cooled these veggies make lunch time fun: green beans, sweet potato fries, avocado slivers.  When cutting food, I make sure there is room to hold it and chew on the end, think short green beans.  This allows baby to pick up their food before complete control of the pincer grasp.

{dinner}

Sweet Potato and Pear - Make a pear sauce, similar to apple sauce (but with the opposite effect on the digestive system) add cinnamon.

Lentil Soup - cook lentils with finely diced carrots and tomatoes in a veggie stock until all bits are soft.  We life to add curry powder to taste - but not salt or pepper yet.

Carrots and Cauliflower - Steam and blend these two veggies and as the baby gets older, add grated cheddar cheese and fresh basil to expand horizons.

Spinach and Lima Beans - When blended, these two veggies have opposite consistencies.  Together, they are ideal for baby learning to spoon feed.

Do you have any favorite foods for baby?  Recipes I should try?  Questions about how I prepare food?  Ask away.  We are moving along to more finger and self-fed foods, but have not yet figured out a consistent rotation.

The Alumni Part of Alumni Weekend

{day two continues...}

Perhaps the best part of visiting Boston is seeing these two, Hull and Nora.  Their family owns the apartment that we lived in when Mark and I first were married.  The apartment was an in-law suite that literally helped us become part of their family.  When we lived next door, we regularly had dinner together, babysat back when they were actually shorter than me, built an incredible garden each spring, and introduced them to our love of lacrosse.  It was a joy to stay with them again and introduce them to Behr.  Behr quickly realized why we love them so much!

{day three}

The insanity of alumni weekend begins.  No matter how much we plan to don't plan we miss folks we want to catch up with, spend time talking to folks we never expected to see, and have a day that is better than we could have ever expected.  Here are bits of our 2011 adventure:

Mark showing Behr the view of the quad from the library.

Behr and his best buddy Sam.
They have grown since their last play date this past spring.

I played lacrosse with these girls.
In other words, we dominated on the field.
Love them.

Sam and Behr were adorable together!

More lacrosse goodness...

Behr stood and watched almost the entire first half.
I think we might have a future lacrosse player.
Either way, Behr certainly made his dad super proud just by watching.

Future lacrosse players and proud papas.

To sum up the day, Lobster and Lacrosse.
It was a great weekend.

Hooray, it is Friday

There are so many reasons to be excited it is Friday.  Here are my five favorite:

1. One of my new favorite baby blogs, which you can find here.

2. Behr and I are boarding a plane to visit with some pretty incredible ladies, Bridget, Candis, Elizabeth, and Molly.  You will get to hear about all of that next week.

3. My house is clean.  It doesn't matter much to you, but it certainly makes me excited!  It brings me great comfort to leave home know things are in order.

4. Did I mention that I am really excited about my weekend plans?  What are you weekend plans?  I want to get excited about yours too!

5. And I leave you with some giggles from our New England weekend:

p.s. the first part of the trip was posted yesterday.  the continuation of the trip will be posted on Sunday.  stay tuned.

A New England Fall

It was about time we introduced Behr to one our favorite places, Boston in the Fall.  So over Columbus Day weekend, we packed our bags and headed North.  This is our trip:

{day one}

Our first day was spent catching up with former co-workers, and dinner with my best friends from high school...who conveniently moved to Boston after I left!
reunited with auntie karlene.  we have a picture that looks just like this from Behr's first week.

walking along the charles river

eating some fine banana
before joining the adults for dinner

reminding auntie katie that her nephews
are not cuter than Behr! :)

{day two}

While Mark went off to play in a golf tournament with some of his lacrosse teammates, Behr and I met up with some "lacrosse wives."  We headed to Russell Orchards to apple cider donuts and a few photo opportunities.

future lacrosse all americans

Behr was not into the picture taking...unless we gave him hay to play with.

One of the things I became most excited about was the chance to "re-enact" our maternity photos from the year before.

original photo shoot here

We took a good long nap after the orchard.  Taking pictures is hard work!  But our afternoon held even more excitement!  Behr and I went back to the old college campus for a stroll with...Bridget and Parker!
We walked around campus with our babies, nursed them in broad daylight in a building that didn't exist when we were students, and got to catch up face-to-face.  It is always great to see old friends.  Seeing Bridget on campus reminded me of how many people I wish I could see more often.  But alumni weekend had only just begun...

I am linking up to small style:

{day one}
Navy and White Knit Romper - Gap
found at a consignment sale for just a few bucks!

{day two}

Jeans - Cherokee
Socks - Old Navy
