Old Wives Tales: Boy or Girl

Carrying High or Low: I am carrying high, which indicates I am carrying a girl.

Carrying out front or all over: I am carrying a “basketball” all front and center, indicating I am having a boy.

Baby’s Heart Beat: 140+ beats per minute indicates a girl, and below 140 a boy. Well, I am right in the middle at 140! Go figure!

Cravings: Sweet means girl and Salty means boy: My bizarre cravings are sweet, but I have always liked salty stuff – now I just want more of it!

Chinese Birth Chart – according to this, I am having a boy. Here is a link to one incase you are interested yourself: Try it here!

Legend has it that the Mayans determined a baby's sex by looking at the mother's age at conception and the year of conception. If both are even or odd, it's a girl. If one's even and one's odd, it's a boy. For me both are even indicating girl.

They say a baby girl steals your beauty. I have been fortunate to avoid pregnancy breakouts and I have had the best hair days of my life – I no longer use a blow dryer! So therefore I must be having a boy.

Morning sickness plagued me for the first 18 weeks and appears to be starting up again {lovely} indicating that I am having a girl.

Every poll I take peg me at somewhere between 60/40 or a straight 50/50 split.  Nearly everyone I know is prediciting boy, but my blog poll is indicating a lead for the girl...so who knows!?!?  What do you think?

26 Weeks

Baby Bump at 26 Weeks

Mark and I had a bit of fun with "poses" on our only semi-blank wall and then editting features with iPhoto.  I can't believe how much has changed over the past 7 weeks.  I promise to take pictures more frequently from here on out!  We find out if we are having a boy or a girl this week, so keep your ears open for the news.  Don't forget to take the "What is Shannon Carrying?" poll.  Currently "girl" is the leader!

Here is the "growth chart" to keep track of the changes:

{I sort of look like a deer in headlights, but the baby bump is cute!}

In Memory: Ret. Lt. Col. Leo James Paradise

Today, my family is gathering at Arlington National Cemetery for the internment of my grandfather Ret. Lt. Col. Leo James Paradise.  He passed away in May at the age of 82.

Joining us at Arlington will be my grandmother, Pop-pop's 7 children, their spouses, and many of my cousins and extended family.

Pop-pop was a proud graduate of the University of Notre Dame and cheered for the Fighting Irish with every opportunity.  He was also a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, the Korean War and Vietnam.

Baby + Early Fall = Honey + Tissues

What on earth am I talking about?  My past week.  Let's just say that allergy season is back in full force causing me to go through a lot of tissues...and a lot of honey!  Fortunately for my CSA I can go the natural route with my allergies and use local honey which helps tremendously.  {Amanda, thanks for the tip!}

Here is a picture I took of our honey jar a few weeks ago...

This jar is now almost empty!  I am at least midway through the "mason." Now if only my hormone inflicted pregnant body would stop producing the stuff that stuffs me up!!

Weekend in PA

We took a crazy impromptu trip to PA mid-afternoon on Saturday to visit Mark's grandfather who recently had surgry.  No trip to Philly is complete without a cheese steak, so Mark accomodated the pregnant woman in his life {read: me} and pulled off the Blue Route for a late lunch at Thunderbird's.  Here I am proudly displaying my belly bump after scarfing down my favorite food:

Their cheese steaks are really good!

When we finally got to Mark's grandparents, we were thrilled to see them both in high spirits.  The few hours we were able to spend with them proved to be both reassuring and rewarding.  Mark's grandfather is already talking about getting out on the golf course and his upcoming cruise in November. We haven't seen them in months, so it was wonderful to be able to catch up with them.

I am loving...

...all things Capiz!

It happens to me every year.  In an effort to hang on to every last drop of summer, I crave beach inspired decor.  This year, in my hunt for a baby mobile that didn't have fluffy animals, I turned towards capiz.  In theory in is "all-year" decor, but for me I think it is a last ditch effort to carry the beach into deep Autumn.

Here are a few lookers that have caught my eye recently:

{image}
This number from target is a bit boring...and it breaks the bank at $400+!  Yikes!

{image}

Perhaps a bit too formal for a baby room, but these West Elm lamps might end up in my formal dining room some day...if I ever have a formal dining room...

Finally, this could work in our Nursery.  And for merely $49 from Urban Outfitters, I like it even more.  Now if only the colors were a bit brighter...

Reasons Summer Can't End

I am so NOT ready for summer to end.  It is not allowed.  I want it to last forever!  Summer is a splendid time of laid back lazy days, good food, great times, and memory building.  This year, I just can't get over the closing of my favorite season {secret: all of my season are my favorite at the end...I never want them to be over!}  Well, here are the reasons I am not quite ready to let go...

1. White Jeans

My favorite white jeans STILL FIT even though I am 24 weeks pregnant!  Why would anyone want to give that up!?

2. Not Enough Beach

Does anyone really ever get enough beach time?  I could go and sit and read each and every day all summer long. Seriously.  I love the beach.

3. Back to School

Whenever September rolls around I get the back to school itch. Not the can't wait to go itch, but the I don't want to do any work, read any books, clean up the house itch. I feel summer slipping away and get lazier than ever. I am going to be a "great" mom...

4. Blueberries

Mmm...they are so good.  I wish they grew all year.  I would make blueberry muffins, blue berry lemonade, blueberry pie, blueberry tarts and probably even some jam or sorbet.  I love smoothie season, especially this year since Mark made some nearly every morning.  Mmmm....blueberries come back to me!

5. ???

Does one really need more reasons to long for summer to last forever?  I am satisfied with four reasons, but somehow five seems to round out the post.  Besides, I know there are more reasons in my heart...I just can't think of them right now.

Dirty Little Secrets:

{The things about summer I am glad to be saying goodbye to, at least for now.}

crazy tourists that all ask me questions, like will you take our picture...  |  90+ degrees every hot stinking day  |  crowded city streets  |  nasty summer city smells  |  neighbors loud outdoor parties that last too long  |  summer interns that lack respect for the city  |  and more, I am sure...

CSA Inspired Recipe: Apple Butter

Beautiful weekend weather has been drawing us to our balcony.  Here is our breakfast from the other morning - featuring the post recipe - Apple Butter.  This is a cooking light recipe recommended by my dear friend Beth who understands the importance of enjoying all things savory!

Homemade Biscuits and Apple Butter!  The perfect outdoor breakfast!

Ingredients:

1 cup packed brown sugar
1/2 cup honey
1/4 cup apple cider
1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
1/8 teaspoon ground mace - I substituted nutmeg
10 medium apples, peeled, cored, and cut into large chunks (about 2 1/2 pounds)

Directions:

Combine all ingredients in a 5-quart electric slow cooker. Cover and cook on low 10 hours or until apples are very tender.

This step recommending by Cooking Light takes too long for a casual cook like me, so I suggest skipping it: Place a large fine-mesh sieve over a bowl; spoon one-third of apple mixture into sieve. Press mixture through sieve using the back of a spoon or ladle. Discard pulp. Repeat procedure with remaining apple mixture.   INSTEAD: Spoon mixture into a food processor - I used my Cuisinart mini-prep - to puree.

Return apple mixture to slow cooker. Cook, uncovered, on high 1 1/2 hours or until mixture is thick, stirring occasionally. Spoon into a bowl; cover and chill up to a week.

It is a fantastic way to usher in the cooler weather that comes at the end of summer...{shhh...I am in denial and unable to call it fall...}

Rugs and Knobs

Thank you!  Thank you!  Thank you!

You all have helped me decide on knobs for the baby dresser...

{image}

...which lead to an amazing rug discovery:

I already ordered both from Anthropologie.  They arrived quickly and I love them!  The colors work together very well and certainly brighten up the space!  I cannot wait to share more ideas I have been coming up with for the nursery.

What is Shannon Carrying?

There has been much debate and anxiety over the fact that we have the gender of our baby tucked away safely in an envelope. So...without further adieu, we are letting you vote!

What is Shannon Carrying?

Update: I can't tell who votes for what, so be sure to leave some comment love too!!

23 Weeks: An Impromptu Photo Shoot

Sunday marked 23 weeks for us and baby.  We were blessed with the joy of kicks all day long!  Mark even got to feel a solid kick for the first time.  We met good friends for brunch at Founding Farmers.  I liked my outfit and my hair so we took pictures before we left...

...now if only I could learn to like my smile.

p.s. I am welcoming "pose" suggestions.  Please help me look less awk-mac (definition: a mac truck of awkwardness)

p.p.s. In case you were wondering, I ate the Waffles Banana Foster and drank Hot Chocolate for breakfast...I think my mouth is still watering days later!

Eastern Shore Crabs

Maryland Blue Crabs, nothing beats them...well except for maybe when you get to catch 'em right out of the bay and steam them within a few minutes!  All you need is some vinegar and Old Bay.  Yup, that is living life right there.  Good ol' Eastern Shore crabs.

Incredible view from the dock.
Crabbing is SERIOUS business.
Pulling up the traps - they look full!
8 crabs in a single pot!
I have always found them beautiful!
The little suckers were clinging to the sides making it quite difficult.
Mark bravely grabs them with his bare hands.
Half our catch.  Now we head back to the house to cook 'em up!
Look at those blue claws!
Steamed and Covered in Old Bay.  Perfect.

2010 Reading List: August

Yup, baby books and Nicholas Sparks still top my reading list, and they have not let me down. I laughed hysterically through Belly Laughs and continue to love each Nicholas Sparks book, including The Wedding. But what I really want to tell you about is The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. This book is incredible. I might pick it up and read it again this month...might...

A compilation of letters between the Channel Islands and England post World War II, this book tells the intertwines stories of not so traditional war survivors. You learn the quirks and defenses as you fall in love with each of these characters. Eventually you watch them let their own guard down and learn to love each other in a lighthearted novel that is all things good and nothing bad (read: sans fluff, trash, and girlish stupidity common in so many books today)

However, my favorite part of this book just might be the story of its authors. Originally started by a passionate reader, but completed by her niece after she passed away, this book defines "keeping it in the family" and maintains a seamless style despite the change in authorship. The niece did an incredible job staying true to her Aunt's words and stepping in to complete this fantastic read.

Go. Buy It. Today.

Have you read The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society? Have you found a recipe for Potato Peel Pie? I would be intrigued. Fill me in.
