Car Seat

I was able to narrow down the carseat to 4 choices. They all had the same key features and only varried in a few areas that we deemed less important. So....drumroll please....after debate since JUNE! I have finally registered for a carseat:

Britax Boulevard 70 CS Convertible Car Seat - Blueprint

You can view it on my baby at Babies R Us here!

shameless? yes!

It's all about the knobs...

We excitedly found a dresser/changing table that would fit perfectly in baby's room originally at IKEA for $199, on craigslist for $120 practically brand new:

My not so fiscally responsible through process is, "that means we can afford to get cute knobs!" Of course I immediately looked at anthropologie and etsy. Here is what I have fallen for so far:

What do you think? Other suggestions? Our nursery will be neutral with a grey, orange, and turquoise color scheme. I am drawn to elephants recently, but I don't want to go overboard.

I might head to "color me mine" and try to create my own...

CSA Inspired Recipe: Peach Cobbler

{image}

I recently emailed Julie of Green Eggs and Hammes for her Peach Cobbler recipe. She didn't post it on her blog, but her hubby raved about it in his facebook status, possibly more than once. It got my mouth watering and then I received an abumndance of peaches in my weekly CSA. So here is her fantastic recipe:

Ingredients:½ cup sugar
1 tablespoon cornstarch
¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon
4 cups sliced fresh peaches (6 medium)
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 tablespoon sugar
1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
½ teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons firm butter
½ cup milk
2 tablespoons sugar

Directions:
1. Heat oven to 400 degrees

2. In 2-quart saucepan, mix ½ cup sugar, the cornstarch and cinnamon. Stir in peaches and lemon juice. Cook over medium-high heat 4 to 5 minutes, stirring constantly, until mixture thickens and boils. Boil and stir 1 minute. Pour into ungreased 2-quart casserole; keep peach mixture hot in oven.

3. In medium bowl, mix flour, 1 tablespoon sugar, the baking powder and salt. Cut in butter, using pastry blender (or pulling 2 table knives through ingredients in opposite directions), until mixture looks like fine crumbs. Stir in milk. Drop dough by 6 spoonfuls onto hot peach mixture. Sprinkle 2 tablespoons sugar over dough.

4. Bake 25 to 30 minutes or until topping is golden brown. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.
In the words of Julie...
"Enjoy enjoy! xoxo"

Stroller Debate: Vista vs. Skate

We are torn between the UppaBaby Vista and the Peg Perego Skate.

Here are the categories by which we are comparing them:

Cost: Comprable $600+ (gasp...I know...but my research says the "heavy" duty strollers with extra nice wheels will be a life saver walking around DC)

Color: Both come in green, though we may consider all black if we go with the UppaBaby. I am not sue I like that "shade" of green. I love the color of the Peg Perego.

Functionality: Same handlebars, similar wheels, both are reversible and have bassinet features, and bassinet stands.

Additional Features: Both have add-ons for jumper seats for the second child. UppaBaby also has a step/stool for pushing three! children around.

Reviews: Both have great reviews from mommies and for their safety features.
What should I do?!!??

. . . or . . .

If you have any experience with either of these, please fill me in!

I want to hear all of your thoughts...

I Cried for Uganda

...not the country, but a person in Uganda, my dearest friend Amanda. I haven't seen her since 2008 and will not see her until at least 2011! Bridget posted about missing Amanda here yesterday. It made me cry.

I was sad on my walk home because I really MISS AMANDA! I performed the mundane details of my afternoon, opened my mail box and found...

...a letter from AMANDA! I have already read it three times and I cannot wait to begin my reply. Thank you Amanda!

New Obsession: Food Trucks

I work in DC where good food is hard to find. I literally work in a concrete wasteland making good food within walking distance an unfulfilled fantasy...until I discovered food trucks!
Call it crazy maternity cravings if you wish, but I expect I will frequent these trucks long after my baby is born. My favorite is Sauca:

mmm...good food!!

Here are a few more I frequent when they are nearby:

DC Slices
Fojol Brothers
Sweet Flow Mobile

I follow all of these trucks on twitter. Perhaps this makes me a nerd, or maybe just really serious about my food.

Too Much Baby Gear!

Overwhelmed with baby gear online, Mark and I journeyed to "test" out the two items we are still undecided on: car seat and stroller. Although the store carried an overwhelming number of both, they carried neither brand we were looking for.

The results of our journey:
- we added about 5 things to our registry, and took 3 off
- we decided that boys baby clothes are WAY cuter than girls (yes, we know this may be contrary to popular opinion!)
- we decided there is way to much crap and came up with a new motto

20 Weeks Pregnant!

baby bump growth
15 : : 19
weeks

We are officially half way there today and more excited than ever to meet our little one. On Tuesday we have our "big" sonogram appointment. We have decided to find out, but not quite yet. Our goal is to miss the telling pictures and ask the technician to print a good clear one when we aren't looking. Then the picture will go into an envelope that we won't open until our wedding anniversary on September 30th. This strategy keeps the secret a bit longer but still allows us to find out before the big day. What are the odds that we will make this work? Or last until our anniversary to dig into the news?

The past few weeks have been great. Here are some highlights:
  • I am no longer getting/feeling sick. Finally! My energy and appetite are returning to their normal (abnormal) state.
  • We can feel the baby! Not any fluttering or kicking yet. But occasionally when our little one nestles up against my side, we can feel the hard spot where the baby settles. At first we weren't quite sure, but now the spot moves around from day to day and sometimes even moves away when we poke! (no wonder)
  • Maternity clothes are taking a hold in my wardrobe. More and more I am turning to elastic waist bands and overly "blousey" blouses. Note to Heidi Klum and Liz Lange: While I appreciate your efforts towards improving the maternity clothing options, please make your next line less trendy and more classic - I am not planning to wear plaid tunics or sequined off the shoulder tops to my government job - but a few timeless knits would be great under my snug suit jackets!
  • I look pregnant! It is a joy to finally "show" your baby bump. I hope to enjoy these moments before I begin to dread the site of the bump on my front. (Hopefully I never reach this point!)

Goals for the next few weeks:
  • Gain weight! For the past 20 weeks my weight has simply been redistributing to my baby. But a few extra pounds would gladly be welcomed if they ensure better health for the baby.
  • Purchase a pill case - because I am driving myself crazy trying to remember if I took my prenatal and DHA vitamins each day! There are too many things to remember for my ever forgetful brain!
  • Finalize the closet "purge" to free up our newly renames spare room so it can quickly be renames once again...to baby nursery. You do remember the spring cleaning that resulted in me becoming perfectly content with my closet, right? Well that has all gone to crap as I am packing up out of season clothes and reorganizing into a much smaller footprint so baby can take center stage.

p.s. In addition to the baby bump growing, you will slowly see my summer tan fading...

Room Inspiration: Retro Appliances

I am a huge fan of all things blue and turqouise, but this appliance set takes the cake!

Isn't it fantastic?! I think my love for retro began with my Yia-Yia and Popouli. Their basement has an old school General Electric fridge that is still running! A friend of the family contacted GE and it may be the oldest known model that is still in working condition. Aside from that cool factor was the bonus of the contents.

Before we visited my Popouli would always pick up some Stewart's Root Beer in their iconic brown bottle with an orange label. It was our little tradition. I would run in his house and give him a huge hug. Next, he would send me to grab something random for Yia-yia out of the basement fridge for him. This was his secret code for "Stewart's." I eventually caught on, but the magic never faded and no matter how old I got, he continued to stock the fridge with Stewart't Root Beer, just for me. As a child it never occurred to me that he was doing this for my other three siblings too...!

Its not all about baby...

...there are still way to many ideas and inspirations running through my head that are not about baby that I am excited to share here. This blog will not turn into a baby blog...even if that is the request of some of you readers {Katherine and Christen, I am talking about you!} So if you get sick of the baby talk, drop me a comment and I will come back to reality. So excited that you are on this journey with me! Please feel free to kick in your two cents.

And the image above is here because it is pretty. It reminds me of what my childhood summer was like, full of festivals and carnivals. What reminds you of your summers as a kid?

2010 Reading List: July

Between our road trip to Maine and two beach vacations, I was in need to some light mindless reading. I can't say it was quality reading, but it definitely was therapeutic.

If you like Emily Griffin, I would recommend you read her newest book. It is a bit different than her previous novels: Something Borrowed, Something Blue, and Baby Proof, but still written in her classic style that makes you eager to turn the page and never want to put the book down.

The House on Oyster Creek is an ultimate summer read. I would highly recommend this book, especially if you have a love for Cape Cod.

I have had the Clare Naylor books lying around and finally picked them up. They were quick and perfect at the beach, but not worth recommending.

What the Dog Saw, by Malcolm Gladwell was the biggest disappointment. It was a great book, a compilation of his New Yorker articles, but unfortunately this book was not what I was expecting. I didn't do my research before tossing it in my beach bag. I was looking for something light and yet this book has left me with lots of ideas to research and challenged a few of my opinions about matters. I would recommend it if you are in the "mood" to be intellectually stimulated.

Note: I took a break from Nicholas Sparks for two months. Have no fear, his older novels are already piled up on my nightstand for my August Reading.

Baby: 8 Weeks and 12 Weeks

We had the joy of having TWO sonograms already! Here are the pictures of our already active baby:

May 25, 2010 - 8 weeks and our first appointment. Our little one was literally just a bean. As you can see the doctor even circles the heartbeat so we wouldn't miss it later.

The dark spot is my uterus and the circled light grey area is the baby.
During the sonogram all you could really see was the flicker of the heartbeat.

June 22, 2010 - 12 Weeks

Here we have two pictures to show how active the baby was, kicking and punching the entire appointment. The baby was too small to feel, but I am sure those jabs will be coming any day now.

See how the arms and legs are tucked in and up.

Now the baby is fully stretched out.

While we were watching, the baby kept running, kicking, and punching. It actually made it hard to get a good image as the baby would blur across the screen! Our doctor said it was one of the most active babies she had ever seen this early. We are not surprised! Now we joke that our little one is doing lax sprints in my belly.

Stay tuned for more updates!

2010 Reading List: June

I spent most of June sleeping whenever I could. Here are a few of the books I managed to read:

Obviously I am not finished these books, but I am about half way through by now (early August) as I am almost halfway through my pregnancy! Yup. We are preggers! I told you I was excited to share about my June reading!

Here are some other books that have been gifted to us:

I cannot wait to get started...or pass these off to Mark to read!

I am back!

And clearly well behind in my blogging. The next few posts are going to be a flurry on information in no particular order. Do me a favor and hang in there. I promise it will be worth it! In the mean time, here is a picture of my view each morning when I read on the porch before breakfast.
