Sideboards Are Cool

And I really want one.

The Queen Anne's style TV stand (meant for a square TV no less) is simply not cutting it anymore. Case in point:

I really loath this piece of furniture. There are very few words to describe my dislike for this "piece." It would be fine as a nightstand/end table in a guest bedroom {if we had a guest bedroom}. Or even our bedroom. Just not in my living room - where we LIVE - get the point?!

My obsession: a mid-century modern sideboard that can serve as our entertainment console, but be multi-purpose as we move from one small capitol hill home to the next.

A host of sideboards from a mid-century modern collector in the DC area.

Choices, choices. What do you think I should do? Do you like the sideboard look?

A Picture is Worth 1,000 Words

Well, some pictures. I received one from my mechanic:

With this message:

"Shannon, it's Russell. The light green is your power steering fluid/dye. Call me when you get this."

Not exactly the text I wanted. And not exactly descriptive. I had no idea what to brace myself for as I called Russell back. A few hundred dollars and a day later, my car is running smoothly. Fingers-crossed that this is not the beginning of the end for my little oldsmobile!

I have neglected you...

...there have been no posts in over a week, and when I did blog, it was all about basketball. How could I be so rude? So inconsiderate to my loyal readers. Wait...are you there? Does anybody still read this stagnant blog? Hello....

Hmm...not sure how many of you are left. But spread the word. The post coming up a great! Here are some topics to cover:

  • new furniture desires
  • spring clothing pics
  • "A Picture is Worth 1,000 Words"
  • and lots more!
Since we have last spoken, the Cherry Blossoms have begun to show their beautiful pink hues.
It has been damp and cold around DC, so the pictures here are from 2008. But I do get to walk or bike under this tree on my way to work every morning!

Oh, and about basketball, Brooke's team finished among the top four. The lost in the semi-finals by 6 points to a team ranked 3rd in the state.

They Did It Again!

With 3.2 seconds left, down by 1, Brooke drove to the lane and nailed a layup to win the game!

Villa advances to the semi finals!!!

Go Villa!

Villa Advances

They Won!

It was a crazy exciting game that was won in the final seconds of overtime, defeating the 5th ranked team in the state! Now they advance to the elite eight, and are scheduled to play Allentown Central Catholic on Saturday. They lost to this team earlier this season in a tight overtime battle.

Go Villa!

Villa Maria Advances to the Sweet Sixteen

You might remember from past years, around this time I begin to post about my sister Brooke. I refrain all season long and then post-season hits and the excitement escalates to a point in which I can no longer hold back how proud I am! Well, Brooke's basketball team is once again in the State Tournament.

Tonight, Villa Maria Academy competes against Trinity in the second round of the PIAA State Basketball Championships. I wish I were in PA to watch the game tonight, but all I can do is cheer for my "little" sister from back home in DC. Inevitably, in the hoopla of excitement nobody will remember to call and update me on the outcome of the game. {I am obviously hoping for the best with this statement!} I will eagerly sit by my phone waiting for the excited play-by-play to be told by Brooke herself once everyone has settled back at home - that is, unless she has too much homework!

I drove to PA the past two weekends to watch Brooke play. About seven weeks ago, Brooke fractured her ankle and sprained it in three places, causing her to miss the bulk of her season. She was in a cast, then a boot, and now finally in ankle braces and tape to prevent movement, yet still allow her to play. She is fighting for her team and the chance to advance beyond the Sweet Sixteen tonight, and I am proud of her! As a Junior, this is her third State Tourney. To win tonight, Villa needs to score big and fight hard. Both of which I am certain Brooke will do. As you can see from the pictures above, she has ups and a serious game face!

Go Villa!
P.S. A big sister is allowed to think her little sister is amazing right?

Honey Collins

Every now and then I change my happy image. A beautiful picture that brightens my mood. The recent rain clearly required a bright and cheery "happy picture." This room was decorated by our friend, Honey Collins.

I love the juxtaposition of the rustic would table and the contemporary orange lamps. The mirrors layered above the fireplace expand the room and play off the wall of windows on either side of this room. Finally, the subtle hints of yellow helps blend the natural flax and linen colors with the pops of orange. Basically, I just love it!

I have always thought this room was absolutely stunning! The use of orange, or as the Boston Globe would call it, Orange Crush, is incredible. It might just inspire a few bright changes around my blog...stay tuned!

A Sturdy Umbrella

Living in DC, I typically commute by foot. Walking in the rain doesn't ever seem to slow me down. But commuting in the wind and rain each Spring does a number on my umbrellas. Each year, I inevitably go through a few umbrellas. No matter how happy I start the wet weather season, my umbrellas end up, well, a bit like this:

So I am on the hunt for a good umbrella. I really have my heart set on a big one with a curved handle. What do you think? Any suggestions?

Oh yeah, and for the days I still really want to bike (even in the rain) I am thinking of trying something new.

Would you still be my friend if I rode to work like this?

It's Raining...

...but I am prepared. Here is my wet weather gear:

I love my North Face rain jacket in a bright, happy green. I bought it in January of either 2004 or 2005...right before a trip to Guatemala. My friend Amanda told me that if I was going to buy something that expensive it better be worth it! Well, at least ten years later. Whoops! My math was a bit off there! About five years later, I still live in this jacket year round. Whenever it is the slightest bit damp, it is my trusty friend.

My most recent wet weather purchase:
Bean Boots!

I have been thinking, hunting, debating the purchase of L.L. Bean boots. I finally buckled down and decided to protect my feet. I wore them 4 straight days this week and my toes couldn't be happier! They have been warm and dry.

I am set! These two things help keep me ready for outdoor adventure in the rain...on weekends. Keeping dry during the work week is "a whole 'nother" story!

Online Photo Storage

So...I have become a full blow paparazzi! There is no "it" person or place that I am obsessed with, I just snap my camera every where I go. I am sentimental, so I want to capture everything. Similarly, I never want to let anything go. This leaves me in my current conundrum.

What do I do with my photos?

Burn them to CDs? Keep filling up my iPhoto? Create more albums on facebook? While I continue to do all of these things, I realize that I need to find a place where I can find all of my photos in a time of need...rather than scrounge to locate the place of choice at the time of interest.

Here are my reservations: (feel free to argue why these are stupid!)

Flickr - Not the best venue for printing, album making, etc.

iPhoto - Is there a way to create sub events? Or move old photos out of the main events page? It is getting a bit crowded! Also, this leaves my pictures on my computer without a back up.

Kodak Gallery, Snapfish, Shutterfly...are their perks to one over another? Currently I have photos uploaded to all three as I caught deals

Picasa - I have been underwhelmed.

Other? Is there a solution that I have not yet thought of?

Give me as much feedback as possible, I really want to know! What system works for you? What is your favorite? Help me please!

Tag, You're a Bogart

Yes, that is correct. I am calling you names, well at least one good one.

My dear friend Bridget passed on The Bogart Award:

"This award means you're really going places, Baby. You'll still be blogging about your great adventures 10 years from now, and I'll still be reading them."

This Award comes with some rules:

In 2020, where will I be?

About to turn 36

Loving my husband more deeply after 13 years of marriage, still going on lots of dates, or course.

Proud mama of a large brood of fantastic children (5+?) who love to be outdoors rolling in the grass, playing in mud, and swimming until the sun sets!

Learning more about leading a Christ-like life each day.

Serving others with greater kindness and compassion

Running a booming calligraphy and stationery business that is nationally recognized (well, maybe just regionally)

We own a home on the Eastern Shore and sail on the bay, often.

Added kayaks, skis, snowshoes, and a larger sail boat to our collection of outdoor gear.

Perfected my golf swing to be able to hit par on a few holes.

We continue to love Washington, DC, the city that made us "urban."

Traveled to a continent I have not yet visited.

Have skied on three more mountains.

And still be blogging...

To 10 of the ladies in my life who are going places, I present you with the Bogart Award!

and two of my DC blogging buddies:

Love Etsy

I really do, I love Etsy. Recently, my heart has been a pitter patter for "different" necklaces. You know, something other than my typical pearls or beads. Then I found this:

I wanted it.
It went on sale.
I bought it.

Wahoo! I cannot wait until it arrives in the mail!

Schreibers Shredding the Slopes:

The branches of these trees were completely covered with ice. Each twig glistened in the sun. I wish I could have captured it better with my camera!

First Run of the Day - in the snow, face first!

The whole gang!
View from The Down Under

See that hill behind me? Phil came flying down to try and spray me. My back and hat got caked with snow. What he didn't anticipate was skiing through his own spray! (Note his temporary salt and pepper look.)

Love the silhouette of trees!

Us!

The roads on the way to our cabin. They got 18 inches of snow the week before we came, and 36 inches after we left. Who said there can't be good skiing in Maryland?
